Toshiba HD A1 for $349 plus shipping

http://www.americantv.com/elec/e_lis...00&vendor=TOSH

Get em while they're hot!

Shipping was only $9 for NYC.

Couldn't find a good older link to put this in. Mods, feel free to move it.

Damn, I'm almost tempted to pick up a 2nd player at that price. My DVD player recently died and I don't wanna get a SD-DVD player to replace it. Decisions, decisions.:)

Mittman 10-09-06 03:20 PM

Damn. I was going to spend like $125-150 on an upconverting player for my new HDTV. But this is tempting.

My issue is that I just don't want to spend too much on software until I know the format will be around for a while. But at this price, I am VERY tempted to jump in and try.

I'd support either format that is supported by all the studios. For those of you who keep up with this stuff, what are the odds Universal will release on BR in the next year or two? They have all my favorite films. If they are dead set on HD DVD only, I may go ahead and jump in.

digitalfreaknyc 10-09-06 03:25 PM

Universal on BD?

Not a chance in hell.

Oh and did we mention that it's an absolutely FANTASTIC upconverting player? :)

Hey Freaky, is this a reputable company? I've never heard of em.

If you go by what the Universal spokesman said about a month ago, they won't be supporting Blu-rry anytime soon.

If it weren't for the fact that the analog inputs were being dumped on the A2 model, I would gladly wait for the 2nd(or 3rd or 4th) gen players. But this might be too tempting to pass on.

digitalfreaknyc 10-09-06 03:30 PM

American? I've definitely heard of them. Never used them though. I guess I just always know that i'm protected by my CC company and the manufacturers warranty. I honestly haven't heard of anyone getting ripped off by buying one of these unless they were doing so on Ebay.

Also, this isn't something you'd want to think about for too long. The A1's are done. No more being made. What's out is out. So whenever these people are done with their stock, they're gone.

Mittman 10-09-06 03:36 PM

Damn you digi. You're making my wallet cry. ;)

So if I'm going to get on the HD train, I need to know . . . how good is this player? Any major flaws that newer models will fix?

The newer models will boot faster, from what I'm told. But other than that, i don't know of any other major (if you consider that major) positive points. In fact, the lower priced model (G2 of this model) won't have the analog out ports that the A1 has and that you would need to experience Tru-HD which is lossless sound. So that might be something that you might actually care about.

Personally, I've had zero problems with mine. It's well-ventilated. Yeah, it takes about a minute to boot up/register an HD DVD. But honestly, by the time I get a drink and/or shut lights off, fix my tv, it's done.

And again, I know people on this very board (and others) who said they'd just rent discs until the format war was settled.

Ask any of them if they're still renting instead of buying. ;)

Uh oh! Digi has been biten by the Blu bug! Can't the A2 still decode TrueHD and send it through HDMI? Of course you need an HDMI reciever for that, but those seem to be dropping in price now as more become available.

Yep, I'm one of those people! I swore I would just rent for a while and only buy my absolute favorites, but between the prices and the quality, I just can't help myself.

No...it will only pass through HDMI 1.3, as far as i know. I could be wrong about that.

That's my dilemma. I could wait for the A2(or some other model), but I'd have to get a brand new HDMI receiver in addition to the player in order to take advantage of Dolby TrueHD.

Geofferson 10-09-06 04:02 PM

This price is very tempting. But so is the fact that the G2 players are on the horizon. :)

Well...but again, no analog...and they're not going to be discounted this soon. The only reason they are is because they want to blow out their stock before G2 comes along.

If you want to pay full price, then you should definitely wait. But if it's the price that's got you, you're not going to find a G2 for this price any time in the near future.

Btw...people are starting to order over at AVS.

Plus, someone else said this:

I picked up the HD-A1 at best buy for 329.55 after tax by price matching American and then using my 12% off coupon that goes through today.

candyrocket786 10-09-06 04:51 PM

2nd Player for the bedroom is looking mighty tempting.

Thankfully, you are wrong about this one. The player will decode TrueHD to PCM and pass it over HDMI 1.1 to the receiver. Blam!

cornflakeguy 10-09-06 05:35 PM

Heaven help me I just bought one.

I got my email receipt and it says I have 1 DVD player at $349.99 and another at $639.99 for a total of 1002.98!!!!

But when I checked out I had the $349.99 plus 16.00 shipping for a total of $368.08!!!

WTF!

I'm calling their CS line but its busy.

I'm not liking my foray into HDDVD so far!!

Try their 800 number. I was just on the phone with someone because I had a similar issue and it got resolved quickly.

clemente 10-09-06 05:40 PM

Quick, someone grab my wallet and keep it away from me - this is too tempting.

I am, how did you ever get through? They dont even post their hours on the net, they are closed now for all I know.

Try 1-800-854-6659. I got a recording saying my wait time would be less than a minute. Sure enough, less than a minute later a lady answered the phone and fixed the problem.

Deftones 10-09-06 06:52 PM

Shit at that price, I may bypass the the Xbox unit all together.

cornflakeguy 10-09-06 08:59 PM

Ok, crisis avoided. I called that second number ( the warehouse ) and they got me to the right folks, bypassing all the other hoo-ha.

So, here is the email receipt I got:

--------------------------------- Your Purchase ------------------------------------
Item_code Vendor Description Qty Qty_X_Amt Status
--------- ------------ ------------------------- --- --------- ----------------------
042000012 Toshiba HD DVD PLAYER 1 349.00 Est ship: 13-OCT-06
042100002 Toshiba HD DVD PLAYER 1 639.90 Est ship: 13-OCT-06

Other Terms and Conditions:

guarantee does not apply to competitors' "limited quantity"
items or out-of-stock items having no rain check availability.

Payment: Visa 363.08

Its the "Total Charge 1002.98" vs the "Payment Visa 363.08" that catches the eye.

I'm all for getting a 1 of each for 363, but my luck I would wind up getting charged for both in the end. Plus, I'm older now, and really don't want to screw any companies over like that, especially ones with decent deals.

The CSA I spoke to seemed VERY appreciative for calling and pointing it out, so perhaps I was in line to get one of each. Oh well, I'm sure it would have been caught. :)

I have already logged into Netflix and switched on HDDVD. I have 2 coming for Friday and the CSA said my player should ship Wednesday.

Now I need a cheap HDMI cable.

digitalfreaknyc 10-09-06 10:16 PM

It comes with an HDMI cable.

Damn it. I think that seals the deal. If I still feel this way in the A.M. . . I'm taking the plunge.
