Upconverting on the HD-A1...better than normal HD Upconvert players?
Not that it matters much now but the anticipation is killing me.
I have a regular bottom of the line Toshiba Upconvert DVD player. Now that I have the HD-DVD player, I am wondering if the upconvert function is any better than the player I have now. Any opinions on this? |

I agree with RockStrongo, I've gone through quite a few upconverting players and none of them touch the A1.

The HD-A1 is terrific at upconverting. I used one of the Sony models before and this blows it away.

I had (well, still have, since it's region-free) the Momitsu V880, which was reviewed as one of the better upconverting players out there. I've had it for a couple of years now and have been extremely impressed with the performance.
The A1 blows this player completely out of the water. It isn't even close. I have to admit that I've probably had more fun revisiting some of my SD DVDs on this player than I have watching actual HD material so far. You won't be disappointed with the upconvert capabilities -- even if I had no interest in HD DVDs, I would consider this player money well-spent. |

Ditto here. Ditched my DVD player, love the A1.

Yeah I agree the A1 is definitly well above average in terms of its upscaling capabilities. I was completly satisfied with it but then my 2nd DVD player broke which I used for my .avi files and decided to order the new Oppo OPDV971H since I had heard so many good things from it. The Oppo is stunning, I didnt think it got any better than the A1 in terms of upconverting but it gets alot better. The OPDV971H features Faroudja's Emmy award-winning DCDi deinterlacing and scaling technology to up-convert standard to HD resolution. It upconverts so well that I am actually purchasing a 2nd one just in case this one breaks and I am unable to get another for whatever reason. The fact that it plays all the misc file formats like Divx XviD and MPEG4 combined with its amazing upconverting ability all for around 200 bucks is a no brainer in my book.
Ill Save my a1 for the HD and let the Oppo handle everything else. For anyone looking to get one of these multiple file players GET THIS PLAYER. You will not belive your eyes. PS..... |
I used an OPPO before the Toshiba, and the Toshiba is a clear winner. I've read posts from people on AVS saying they junked their top of the line Denons when they saw the picture on the HD-A1.
|
Yes it is better than my upconverting dvd player. I'll only be keeping the standard player for dvds from different regions. (Wish I could use the Toshiba for those also)
|
BobDole42 in another thread said the upscaling is as good as his Denon 2910 which is a kick ass DVD player, so it's top-notch.
|
I went through a lot of upscaling dvd players before I bought hd-a1. These included Denon 3910, Sony 9100ES, as well as lower cost ones such as Bravo and Momitsu. This is the first player that satisfies me just for dvd playback.
|
I think the upscaling is slightly inferior to the Denon 2910 but it is better than most other DVD players I have seen. Definitely better than the junk players from Samsung and others that I have seen.
|
I just watched my first up converted movie (The Rock Criterion Eddition) and was completetly blown away. Fantastic up converting player.

There is a clear difference between the two at least on my TV which is a Pionerr 5060 Plasma. Dont know if the TV has anything to do with it but the A1 is clearly not better on my setup.

I have the Oppo, and have viewed digi's A1 a number of times and I think it clearly is better than the Oppo..If I would have known the A1 was going to be such a good machine, I would have passed on the Oppo and saved that $$$ for when the Tosh came out.
|
One telling thing I noticed when comparing the Denon and the A1 was mosquito noise. The Denon really does a great job of cleaning up artifacts like this probably because it has the Faroudja chip. The A1 lags behind a bit, but still the picture is pretty darn good and it depends on how picky you are.
