RUMOR: PS3 games not able to do 1080p, will upconvert 720p

"Whatever changes are made to the hardware however, we are told that Sony will not be able to meet its initial target of 1080p Full HD that it had originally set and will instead deliver 720p and will upscale it or allow the new TVs to do so. This, apparently, will save CPU cycles and will save gamers from the dreaded loss of frame rate."

Man, this isn't a big deal to me, but I haven't been touting the huge advantage of 1080p over 1080i. And now the PS3 will upconvert 720p?

I am actually waiting and wanting a positive PS3 rumor.

edit: link fixed. This is actually from February. Didn't hear anything about it back then.

flashburn 08-30-06 02:24 PM

Not surprised. The amount of CPU power 1080p vs 720p uses is huge, but the picture quality difference would be negligible.

digitalfreaknyc 08-30-06 02:24 PM

:rotfl:

Now THIS deserves it's own thread.

I'll say it again.

WHAT A FUCKING MESS.

Edit: wait. that article is from February. That's too old. Something had to have changed.

Wait. Am i actually giving Sony/BD some credit???!?!?

candyrocket786 08-30-06 02:36 PM

My TV only does 1080i or 540p.....so where does that leave me?

kvrdave 08-30-06 02:41 PM

It upconverts, so you would be good.

Giles 08-30-06 02:59 PM

as digi noted what a clusterfuck

this doesn't surprise me at the least.

Supermallet 08-30-06 03:03 PM

I almost think Sony is trying to sink themselves.

The Bus 08-30-06 03:04 PM

I'd be willing to outright dismiss that article, not only because it's so old, but the article also says the PS3 will be out in the summer in Japan.

Also, it's from "MegaGames"...

Blitz6Speed 08-30-06 03:05 PM

Feb 14 article? You guys are reaching beyond the limits of fanboys. The PS3 WILL do 1080p out. Gran Turismo HD news which was just a few weeks ago stated how it will be 100% 1080P and it will playback movies at 1080P.

kvrdave 08-30-06 03:08 PM

I didn't know I was a fanboy. :(

I certainly hope you are right. Again, I don't think it honestly matters, but I don't have my heart and soul wrapped up in it.

Burnt Thru 08-30-06 03:17 PM

Isn't the message of that article that certain games will not be at 1080p, not that the movies won't be? That's if there's credence to it's claims. Shouldn't this have been reported all over a number of more trustworthy sites if it was true?

digitalfreaknyc 08-30-06 03:18 PM

Blitz,

If it's true, are you still going to get one? I don't see why anyone WOULD at this point.

Come on, the OP corrected that himself, and several other pointed it out before you posted. Why are you still allowed to fan the flames around here again?

I don't think anyone has confirmed it either way at this point.

Not the $499 one.

Supermallet 08-30-06 04:02 PM

You can do 1080p over component.

It is not true. It has to output 1080p or the Blu-Ray logo cannot be on the front of the damn thing. You beleiving it is as gullible as it gets.

And yes, the specs sheet list 1080p for the 499 and 599 versions. Both output it.

Outputting 1080p for movies and for games are 2 different things though.

I also don't think it is true, but it would not suprise me.

Remember in 2005 when the PS3 was going to support 2 1080p sets for a 3840x1080 dual-head experience? Sony scaling back is nothing new.

Supermallet 08-30-06 04:12 PM

Considering that almost no video games are actually developed in 1080, this isn't really a big deal if it isn't affecting the movies. But it would be one less selling point that Sony can use. You can bet I'm going to tell every customer at my store about this.

I just realised you must work at a video game store. LOL, sorry to hear.

Adam Tyner 08-30-06 05:40 PM

If this only relates to games, it's really not deserving of its own thread in this forum.
