Amazon Toshiba HD-A1 player $399 (as of 9/18/06)

Wasn't sure where to post this since there's only a software bargains thread. I ordered this player on Wednesday at $492.xx with A9 discount and it just arrived yesterday with prime shipping. With one simple call just now, got a $40 refund. This a great deal from a reliable online retailer. Should be even cheaper than Best Buy with the 12% coupon after taxes. On top of that, you get free standard shipping and 10% off all future HD purchases.

Here's the link Toshiba HD-A1

Edit, price has dropped an additional $10.

I noticed the price drop as well. I'll probably hold off for a 2nd gen player, but it's temping to pull the trigger. Of course, BD is still on the horizon but I'm not seeing much potential there.

Wow, shows up as $413.99 for me. Tempted to return my player to WalMart and pick this up.

edit: Nevermind, just noticed that that wasn't actually from Amazon. I see the same $459.99 price from Amazon.

I got mine through continental one pass for $363 shipped and all I had to do was use 100 of my miles and I have 111,000 miles so I finally pulled the trigger on an HD DVD player.

Sent a request to Amazon for a credit on the difference, since I purchased mine less than 30 days ago. Maybe I'll use that refund for another HD DVD. Thanks for the info.

Any deals like that with AA miles?

The Amazon deal could be better in the long run though. How long does the 10% off HD DVD purchases last?

1 year. But, you don't have to buy the player from Amazon; you can buy 3 HD DVDs at the same time to get in on the 10% deal.

I gotta pay tax from Amazon, so I won't be pulling the trigger just yet.

I havent heard of anything with AA miles but then I just joined AA mileage this month when I went to Saigon and Tokyo on AA so I havent had much experience with them. I think American express has an offer for like 70k points but I have no idea how much you have to spend to get that many points and I dont use AMEX so I havent checked into it.

Usually those credit card points are 1 point for one dollar, but certain purchases can get you bonus points.

FWIW, buy.com has the A1 listed for $429.98, free shipping. But they aren't in stock (unlike Amazon), "ETA currently in August":
http://www.buy.com/prod/Toshiba_HD_D...202472569.html

I've also got a 10% coupon code, $15 max (sorry, only works for the e-mail it is sent to). Damn, this is getting tempting. Was hoping to wait for the 2nd gen player...

I doubt any subsequent players at this price range will have the same build quality. The A1 is a tank.

If your Wal-Mart even carries HD DVDs, which mine doesn't.

I know, I know

The downside is that the A1 doesn't have the DVI problem fixed yet, so far as I have read. And it does have the slow boot times and the reportedly wretched remote (I have no desire to have to buy a universal remote). And the A2 might have some new features.

But $415 is tempting...

Thanks, the $15 off $200 coupon in "Electronics" at the site you listed works for the A1 and expires 8-31-06. So, no hurry

My personal e-mail coupon is still good for another couple of weeks as well.

Buy.com offers a 12 month replacement plan for $33.99 and a 24 month replacement plan for $52.99:

12 or 24 month Extended Replacement Plan
For 12 or 24 months after the manufacturer's warranty expires, if your product fails for any covered reason, WaCA will replace it with a Gift Certificate valid in our store for the original purchase price!!

What the "covered reasons" are, I don't know.

Anyone know what Toshiba's warranty is for the A1?

STOP IT!!!! I CANT HOLD OUT FOR MUCH LONGER!!! ...So so tempting, but the DVI issues are keeping me away for now. That and hopefully the xbox add on will be a viable option.
