How much is the average cost?

It depends on which studio releases the films and in which country. For example all of the Studio Canal titles only include a promo trailer for future releases on HD DVD and video & audio callibration tools. No extras what-so-ever. The Filmax version of Underworld Evolution contain all extras in English with Spanish subtitles or a Spanish dub which can be turned off.

Here's a good summary of HD DVD titles:

Damn I love imports, both will be copped.
I need to get that Spanish release of Underworld 2
Shit at this point I am going to have more imports than domestic releases :)

Highlight a German independent distributor announced to support Blu-Ray, as well. On HD DVD they released only "The Perfume" by now.

Since the new Resident Evil and Fantastic Four movies start in late summer in Germany, Highlight decided to release "Resident Evil", "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" and "Fantastic Four" on both, HD DVD and Blu-ray.

Release dates were not given yet.

I watched Mulholland Dr. for the first time tonight. Did anyone else notice a high pitch to the audio? Also a lack of surrounds? Kinda disappointed.

I haven't had a chance to check the pitch yet, but the lack of surrounds is deliberate. The DVD is the same. David Lynch decided a few years back that he no longer likes surround sound and prefers almost everything to come from the front channels. You'll notice the same on his supervised remixes for Wild at Heart, Fire Walk With Me, and The Elephant Man.

Edit: I've just done a comparison to the DVD, and dammit the HD DVD's pitch is off. Definitely too high. I thought they'd fixed this problem. Very disappointing. :(

Josh: thanks for the tip re: surrounds. It's been a while since I watched the regular DVD. Guess I didn't notice it then.

Thanks for confirming the pitch too. I thought it was off from the get-go, but realized it even more when "16 Reasons" started. Very bummed about this.

dkny75 06-15-07 10:55 AM

I guess we'll have to wait for a Universal release in the U.S. then.

RichardW 06-18-07 08:04 PM

I noticed listings at CD Japan, HMV Japan and Amazon Japan for Band of Brothers HD DVD Vol 1-5 for a 7/27/07 release date. I hope that means HBO will release it domestically soon so I can get it for a lot less coin.

JackBurton 07-05-07 03:00 PM

I saw this in the hi def digest forums, no details though:

Apocalypto HD-DVD being released in Poland:
http://www.idvd.pl/sklepy/filmy/produkt/31800-059HDD/

Maxflier 07-29-07 11:49 PM

This isn't really BD-only, since it hasn't even been announced for Blu-ray, but it is a Fox movie and stuff and it's coming out in Germany according to someone over on AVS:
http://www.anixehd.tv/shop/images/pr...ages/290_0.jpg

Defiinate purchase for me.

Supermallet 07-30-07 03:44 AM

I believe Fox did in fact announce that one for BD in the U.S.

Maxflier 07-30-07 08:53 AM

I thought Fox was on hiatus.
And apparently there is much confusion over this one as it is listed as just Fantastic Four but the picture indicates it being the second movie. I'm guessing it is actually just the first FF movie with the wrong cover art. Although if they release the first one, I don't see why they wouldn't bother to release the second one also at some point.

HD-DVDs not available in the US

I was comparing Amazon's US website with their UK one and noticed a number of movies not available in the US. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, The Prestige, and Mulholland Dr to name a few.

Could you guys list some good ones to check out?

Supermallet 08-10-07 06:00 PM

Josh wrote up a review of Harry Potter, although you may want to wait for the 5-movie box set of HP movies coming out in 4th quarter.

PopcornTreeCt 08-10-07 06:06 PM

Ah, thanks for showing me this thread.

Has anyone watched or even read a review of Studio Canal's La Haine release? I'm very, very anxious to hear about this one.

Arpeggi 08-10-07 07:30 PM

I have La Haine. PQ is excellent, much better than the Criterion (which is already great). I believe the subtitles are the same too (so no Asterix and Obelix (if you've seen the movie you know what I mean)). It was under $30 when I bought mine from sendit.com.

I have the Mulholland Dr HD DVD import and it is a great movie. I would rent it first here if you haven't seen it yet. It is a little weird and you have to watch it carefully so you won't get lost.

Match 08-11-07 01:11 PM

Mr. Bean's Holiday is being released in theaters on Aug 24 but's it rated G because Universal edited the movie for the family audience.

The HD DVD of Mr. Bean's Holiday is being released in Australia on Aug 15 and in the UK on Aug 20. Both are rated PG.

Anyone know if the UK or the Australia release are the same hd dvd?

That is great to hear. I really enjoyed this movie and would love to see it in HD.

Where can I buy the Australian Blu-ray version of Casino Royale? Everywhere I looked, it's sold out. [the uncut version]

It's out of stock at EzyDVD right now, but check back in a few days. They tend to replenish their stock quickly.
