Problem with sound with RCA HD-DVD player
 

Ok, I just got the new RCA HD-DVD player and I'm having a couple issues with it. My biggest issue is when playing SD-DVDs the receiver seems to constantly be attempting to figure out what to do. Even when I do something as simple as going to the next chapter the receiver seems to be re-acquiring what sort of signal it is getting.

I've never heard anyone have this issue, so I"m wondering if I hooked something up incorrectly or what...

For information: I have an HDMI cable hooked to the TV, and a coaxial cable connected to my receiver.

As has been said here before, use analog.

I guess I can do that. Why does it do what it's doing though, when it never did this with my old DVD player?

My receiver has several different 'input modes' btw.

In DTS play mode:
1: full auto
2: digital manual

In DVD/6CH play mode:
1: full auto
2: digital manual
3: 6CH input
4: analog


I believe right now it's set to 'full auto'. Could this be what's creating the issue for some reason?

Also, if I do hook up the 6 analog connections, i assume I need to put it on 'analog' mode?

Yes sir. Analog. That's what everyone is using. Just get some RCA cables and have at it! :)

My HD A1 and my receiver didn't get along when I used the optical or coaxial connection. I got some distortion sound. Once I switched to analog, it was all gravy from there. As mentioned, use the analog connections.

So you're saying the RCA player works best with RCA cables?

Another quick question: Through the analog inputs the receiver no longer says that it's getting DD or DTS. How do I know the type of sound I'm getting?

Okay, I've got another annoying problem with the sound.

I have the HDMI cable going directly from the HD-DVD player to the TV, and the analog cables going to my receiver. The problem is that I get sound out of my TV speakers and 5.1 setup.

I can turn the TV speakers off, but then every time I go back to watching TV again I have to turn them back on. There's got to be a better way of doing this.

I did notice that my TV has an option for HDMI where you can put it on auto, digital, or analog. Should I put it on analog? Or is there an option on the HD-DVD player itself that I just didn't notice?

I have problems with the analog. When I play HD-DVDs there is very little low frequency whereas with SD-DVD the lows are there.

You might want to make sure it doesn't think it's meant to output sound via HDMI.

How do I do that?

In the settings under audio, you should be able to choose your output settings. I'm using an HDMI->DVI adaptor, so the sound isn't an issue for me no matter what setting I have it on, so I'm not 100% certain which it's meant to be. Consult your user manual to see which setting it should be on to turn off HDMI audio playback.

That's the thing...the manual doesn't seem to mention turning off HDMI audio anywhere.

All I see in the audio menu for 'digital out hdmi' is:
auto
bitstream
pcm
downmixed pcm

One would think OFF would be a freakin option, but I guess not.

What did you have it set on up to this point?

It's just set to hdmi auto.

Why not try setting it to bitstream or something else? Maybe by setting it to auto it's trying to pass audio no matter what else you have set up.

Alternatively, you could just hit "mute" on your TV.

I set the TV's HDMI audio input to 'analog', and that seems to be working. I assume that means that it's trying to get audio from the analog inputs next to the HDMI input, instead of getting it from the HDMI cable itself.

Anyone else have to do this?

You shouldn't use your TV speakers, anyway. You've got a stereo system, use it. Even for the news. What does it hurt to have better sound?
