1) It's from a reviewer who gave The Perfect Storm a perfect rating, placing it above all other HD DVDs released to date. This alone makes me think his opinions aren't worth considering.

2) He's being called out on AVS for posting what may be a completely fabricated review. The Lionsgate release apparently only includes the theatrical cut, but his review lists extras that according to Robert "Obi" George aren't on the disc and claims the director's cut is included. The reviewer says that he has a pre-release copy with a disclaimer that says it may vary from the finished product, but in the six and a half years I've been reviewing DVDs, I've never, ever seen this happen. Slight differences, sure, but not entirely different cuts of the movie and drastically varying extras.

Thanks for posting the review. Sounds like it looks and sounds awesome! I wonder which version of the movie it is? Amazon has it listed at 125 minutes (a long movie ;) ), but IMDB lists the theatrical cut at 137 minutes with the two directors cuts at 152 and 154, so I assume Amazon is incorrect.

Where does he say the directors cut is included?

Here.

("bbguy" is the reviewer.)

Mr. Cinema 06-25-06 09:32 PM

DVD Empire has 152 minutes for the running time.

So you're gushing over a review from a guy who admits in the thread that he is not really into video and audio, and doesn't know what to look for to judge it? Well, you just sold me on BD. Hang that mission accomplished banner.

One, I didn't read or even know of that threads existance over at AVS where the reviewer said those things. Two, he said he is not as into A/V as some of those guys over there, and not that he is not into A/V. That could probably be said of most of us when compared to some of the folks over at AVS. Three, who is trying to sell anybody anything. I was just glad to see a strong positive review for a Blu Ray title. I have seen the preview disc and XXX. I was not parfticulary impressed with anything on the preview disc and was dissapointed with XXX, but then neither format has blown me away yet.

Anyway, I guess we will have to wait till Tuesday to find out for sure which version is on the disc. Hopefully someone will post their thoughts on the video and audio quality then as well.

Josh Z 06-25-06 10:30 PM

I don't have this disc but....

The review states in several places that this is a Sony release and says that it has a PCM track. Unless I'm mistaken, isn't T2 actually owned by Lions Gate now? And none of the other Lions Gate Blu-rays use PCM audio.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but this seems extremely suspect to me.

Actually I was referring to blitz mentioning that he was "shocked" no one had posted this yet.

Shocked due to the extreme HD-DVD biased on this forum.

You criticize this forum for being HD-DVD "biased", but are blatantly BD biased? Why is your bias any better?

Josh Z 06-26-06 11:48 AM

I'm calling shenanigans on this "review". Based on the author's comments in the AVS thread, it's clear that he has no idea what he's talking about. I'm also suspicious of how he's getting screeners so far in advance of any other review site. I bet he watched the Extreme Edition DVD and thought it was a Blu-ray.

Adam Tyner 06-26-06 09:35 PM

It's been confirmed that the review was a fabrication.

Supermallet 06-26-06 09:39 PM

That's sad that people feel the need to outright lie to defend any format.

Shame on you HD biased people for pointing out that "great" BD news was false. What do you have against the format?

kvrdave 06-26-06 11:28 PM

Anyone else shocked this was a fabrication? It feels like the guy who bought the Bose and now wants you to buy it too, so that he can feel better about his purchase.

raven56706 06-27-06 07:14 AM

Well, I guess now we know that "David Manning" found work again.

Adam Tyner 06-27-06 03:13 PM

This same reviewer also posted an unusually early review of V for Vendetta, and some readers questioned if that was legitimate. He posted a "photo" of his disc as proof, and the image didn't have a hole in the center of the disc. :)

Maybe that's where they're trying to recoup those lost 5GB?

Adam Tyner 06-27-06 03:50 PM

Since there isn't much more to post here other than continuing to poke fun at this schlub for getting caught red-handed, I'll go ahead and close this thread.
