HD DVD to Introduce Region Coding

DVD-Recordable: HD DVD to Intro Region Coding

The decision is part of the 34th Steering Committee Meeting of the DVD Forum, held on May 24 in Seattle, U.S.. The organization approved the establishment of a "HD DVD RPC Ad hoc group" to work with appropriate Working Groups to develop a specification and enforcement plan for RPC on HD DVD-Video, including region map and requirements in consultation with the studios.
Perhaps this is why Paramount has indefinitely postponed their releases, and why King Kong remains nowhere in sight?

What would this have to do with either of those decisions?

I doubt region coding is holding back King Kong. I thought they were always planning on releasing that in the middle of Summer. Perhaps Universal and/or Paramount is also waiting for a few more players to be made and sold first.

Plus...paramount had pushed theirs back to June anyway. This is nothing new.

Some studios may want region coding for their more important properties, while others may refuse to release anything without it. Looking at the article it seems to be the studios instigating this development.

Region coding makes me sad. :(

Enh. doesn't worry me. eventually they'll come out with region-free players and plus, we now have Japan in our "region" no?

For the moment, that only applies to Blu-ray. We'll have to wait and see if the HD-DVD camp does the same thing.

Not true. I already have an HD Japanese disc.

I think I see what you're saying. HD-DVD currently doesn't have region coding, but that looks like it may change. If region coding is adopted then discs from Japan may no longer work with future US HD DVD players. It would all depend on what countries fell into what region codes. They could adopt the same scheme as Blu-ray, but they may not.
