While I do love the HD-DVD factor, I'm really enjoying it right now as a kick-ass upconversion player. Pretty much all my SD DVDs just sound/look better with this machine. |

http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread....82#post7030982 Candy and I have been talking the last few nights about how AMAZING the sound is on this thing. It makes all of my discs sound better than they've ever sounded on any of my other players. |

After you using that for many years... I was blown away by the Sony NS70 upconversion. Naturally, I was pissed about the loss of being region-free. Now... I'm in heaven with the HDA1. Still the 727 was a great player for us regionfree folks. |

-The Intro in all its glory. -Unleashing Hell in the Mansion -Cyclops' Optic Blasts in Magneto's Prison.... You can really feel that "THUMP" when a few of the guards hit the wall and Xavier slams against the door. -Boston Xjet Escape. |
Hmm. I wonder what you'd think of those scenes with a subwoofer that can play 15Hz at over 100db?
I'm going to start sounding like a shill in a moment. |

I'd have to drop a name to be a shill, wouldn't I? Like SVS.
Aww, shit. :) |
I watched Revenge of the Sith the first night I had my player and my jaw was on the floor the entire time. Everything just popped off the screen.

The Coruscant Space Battle was mind blowing. Shit was coming from everywhere!!!!
I found the Final Duel a little different and more enjoyable. The scene where both Jedi use the simultaneous "Force Push" was probably one of my favorites. |
Fantastic Four is another dvd that really benefits from the upscaling and audio boost. I'll have to settle with the dvd version until Fox crosses the line and releases it on HD DVD. ;)
Epside III is also excellent as others mentioned. |
I've really been enjoying the sound of HD DVD since it is finally something that tops laserdisc after all these years, but I can't help but think how everything would sound with a brand new receiver and better speakers. (Where did I put that credit card)
|
Question for those who say the sound is better: how do you have this player connected? Analog output or digital? If you're using the analog outs it would make sense if the DAC is better in this player than the ones on your receivers. With a digital connection, I don't understand how it could be better if it's sending the same data to the receiver.

I'm not sure how, but the HD A1 does add some oomph to DD tracks on standard dvd. I thought I read that it produces the full bit rate on DTS tracks. I listened to FF with DTS and could definitely tell that the soundtrack was fuller and sounded stronger than when I used my dvd player.
Mine is hooked up via analog. |
Using the Analog setup with my HDDVDS and SDDVDs.
