Subwoofer Buzzing (HDA1)???

Anyone experience a buzzing sound from their subwoofer when using the Analog Setup?

Noticed it alot during my viewing of X2 (which was awesome!!!).

Can't figure out how to get rid of it...

Sounds like you have a ground loop problem. Apparently the A1 is sensitive to this. Unplug the power cord and put it onto the same circuit as your receiver, and see if that helps.

I had the same thing with my XA1. in testing I unplugged my Comcast cable lines from my system and it stopped. it was recommended that I try this:

video isolation transformer

I can't verify if it works though since I realized it was improper grounding on Comcasts part and when I corrected it I solved the problem without spending a dime.

Actually all my hardware is jacked into my Panamax.

I guess I could plug the HD into another outlet on the Pana.

Assuming you have cable TV service, try disconnecting the cable feed (not the power, but the coax cable itself) and see if the buzz goes away. If it does, you need the component that ChrisHicks recommends.

Yep... well that was part of it. Most of the noise was gone when I disconnected the cable feed. There's still a very faint sound from my speakers when the TV is on.

...but that's only noticeable when I max-out the volume on my receiver.

Thanks guys.

Actually, if this is the problem, you should get the cable company to fix it. It is their problem not yours (tell them you have a groundloop hum). They have something grounded wrong. It is against code and I assume it can be dangerous. I just have a problem buying something to fix an error that the cable company has caused by incorrectly grounding their system.

Congrats, you are now turning your HT system (instead of the ground outside) into the last place a lightning strike will stop. I suggest returning that and making your cable company properly ground your line like they should have done in the first place.

Actually.... I think lightning will hit/kill the Panamax before it even touches my equipment.

Strange thing.... if it is a grounding issue with my cable company, I never noticed it prior to having the HDA1.

dick_grayson 05-24-06 10:49 AM

how much of a pain in the ass will it be to get the cable company to admit that it's their issue and actually send someone out to fix it. also, what are the odds that the jackass they send out will actually fix it? I have little to no faith in Comcast's customer service (or just about any other utility company)

Spiky 05-24-06 10:54 AM

I'm guessing the Panamax is part of your system, no? Ground loops are often strange. They can show up or be masked in a variety of ways. Sometimes it just takes that one last machine to pop them up. Usually it's the subwoofer, since they are very sensitive to 60Hz signals and variations on those signals.

Actually, proper grounding will likely prevent lightning from ever striking that wire. The odds go way up (against a direct strike) if the wire appears electrically the same as the earth. Considering grounding should be free to you, that's even cheaper than the isolator. I have 7 wires grounded on the back of my house. 4 sat lines, 1 antenna line, the dish itself, and my phone box. It's not pretty, but I've never had a hum anywhere.

Pretty Much....

I'll give TW a call.... but I don't have much faith in the techs fixing it.

Give it a try, though...

That's one reason why I switched (back) to DBS. I, too, had zero faith in TWC fixing the loop, so I switched to DBS (didn't even call them to let them try to fix it). The loop was one thing and the quality of the image was really poor.... I used it for a while because it was super cheap for a while if you switched from DBS to TWC.

Nice Panamax. Very nice.
