Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD fanboyism
 

There have been accusations of "fanboyism" on both sides of this, but it has been noted by some that BR supporters are more fanatical. In fact, I don't even think there is an HD-DVD fanboy problem.

I would define a BR fanboy as someone who rabidly supports BR basically no matter what. They often like to trash the competition - HD-DVD - even though they don't officially consider it "competition".

A while ago, people were asking for "proof" claiming that HD-DVD fanboys are just as bad, etc., etc.

Well, look at these signatures I've skimmed (mostly from avsforum). You just don't see this kind of stuff from the "other" side. It really turns me off, although, I'm thankful that they mark themselves like this, so I know where they're coming from.

It really seems like they go way out of their way to convince the rest of us to join the chorus-- like they don't think BR can stand on its own (personally, I don't think it can). I think they're feeling the heat:

i doubt they have employees on here. what good would that do? i think they're all defensive because everyone is quick to jump down sony's throat and claim BRD as the next betamax while neither format has really proven anything yet.

I'd have to disagree with that statement...but that's not what this thread is about.

I believe there is far more fanboy fanaticism with Blu-ray. As you have pointed, their childish signatures and campaign slogans add fuel to the fire. In addition, many of them don't care about high quality, HD movies. They care mostly about the format. In other words, the format is more important than the movies. I would venture to say that even if HD DVD happened to provide better picture quality and better audio (which may be the case with the initial MPEG2, 25gb regular BD disc, with no DD+), they would still support Blu-ray while hold to this fanatic idealism and fantasy.

What do the members of AVSforums have to do with this site? Is this draging of feuds over to another forum considered acceptable on DVDtalk? Frankly I think the number of rabid HD DVD fans on this site far outweighs the couple of BD fans: Perhaps this is why you went looking on other forums for these sigs?

To me (and many people I know) Sony has always been a cocky and arrogant company. Hell, the PS3 division itself can't go more than one week without saying something unbelievably arrogant.
From what I've experienced it seems Sony supporters inherit the same type of arrogance from the company.

I've noticed it on the SACD forums and was always turned off by it (and I own a SACD player). That forum seems a lot more toned down now since they've finally realized the format will never go beyond an extremely small niche.

The PS3 forums exhibit this arrogance as well, and I've noticed this with the Blu-Ray supporters.

Most of the time it seems their basing cockiness on nothing more than Sony's promises. It was like that in the early days of SACD and it's happening with the PS3 and Blu-Ray.

I guess the key is to stay away from those forums, but I don't find anywhere the same level of arrogance in the DVD-A, XBOX or HD-DVD forums.

That's just my experience for what it's worth.

We Blu-Ray fanboys love capacity. We believe without good capacity the format is inadequte. Sure initial titles will be MPEG-2 and single layer but that is temporary. Some of the movies are short enough for it not to matter. Warner is apparently working hard to make Blu-Ray machines VC-1 compatible and Dual Layer discs will be out before years end. The fact is 30 gigabits is not enough. Many argue it is but many also argued that single layer DVDs were enough back in 1997. With Blu-Ray we will most likely get 50 gigabit VC-1 discs before years end. You will never get 50 gigabit VC-1 discs on HD-DVD. Plus with the Playstation 3 having a million units I don't think HD-DVD can handle such numbers.

Why don't you go find the equivalent HD-DVD fanboy sigs.

I could care less which format wins this stupid war. I'll buy both and enjoy my HD movies because isn't that supposed to be priority #1?

I am getting so damn tired of reading all the HD-DVD this, Blu-Ray that crap that has been posted so many times on the forums I read/post at that I'm surprised its not just leaving a sour taste in my mouth about the whole damn thing.

I am not a fanboy of Blu-Ray or HD-DVD, I am a fanboy of HD, so if there is a title I want available I could care less what what type of shiny disc its presented on as long as its properly presented on disc.

yeah, we SACD fanbase, know that one has to purchase imports to support the format.

You should have read through these threads about a month ago. There were nothing but BD support. And once the PS3 prices were announced, the number dropped even more. Some of our members who were very vocal about BD have switched to HD-DVD. That certainly will shift the numbers as well.

for me i dont care....one will win and one will lose eventually.... just a matter of which one and if the ps3 will make a big bang

Or not. I think both formats will survive, ala DVD+R and DVD-R. I'm sure Sony will eventually allow dual-format players to be made and that will only help this happen.

Ah, thanks for explaining it to me, now it makes a good deal more sense. In religion recent converts are sometimes known as the most rabid supporters of the faith - perhaps we're seeing some of that on here.

As to the suggestion someone made that I look for pro-HD DVD sigs: sorry but I have better ways to waste my time. Days of Being Wild, or Raiders of the Lost Ark? Decisions, decisions...

Of course, since Burnt decided to start frequenting these threads recently, he probably doesn't know that I used to be just as ardent a fan of BR. ;)

I would say a lot of really nasty condescending attitudes help those "rabid supporters" to come out. But that's just my opinion.

Well, that... and the fact that you can't find any. I gathered those sigs in the time it took you to post your replies in this thread.

If you've read even a small volume of posts, those sigs stand out like a sore thumb. Most of them are easy to spot because they have to keep them bold and blue which will make your eyes cross against the background of some forums.

What is striking is that you don't see the equivalent HD-DVD versions. It really gives BR a bad name.

As for buying both formats... that's not an option for me. I'll end up buying an HD-DVD player and buying only must haves (Goodfellas, for example) and rent the rest. If it turns out BR bites the dust, I'll pick up my buying habits and start building my collection. If it turns out HD-DVD bites it, I'll eventually get a BR deck... when they're cheap enough.

Once studios figure out that the war is causing mass confusion, they'll go format neutral and let the market decide... the whole point of bringing HD to market is to pick up slagging DVD sales. Therefore, anything that hurts HD sales is Bad. Take me for example, 850+ DVDs and I've completely stopped buying any. I intend to get an HD-DVD player, but will severely limit buy buying discs because I don't want to end up with a bunch of HD-BetaMax discs.

At the risk of opening a can of worms, what criteria do you use to identify someone as a "rabid HD DVD fan"? I know I'm not one, and I can't think of many others who would qualify, either.

In fact, there is only one person on this forum that I would definitely count as a rabid HD DVD fan, and that is by his own admission ;). Everyone else (other than some of the BD Boys) is only interested in backing up claims with factual evidence, dispelling mis-/dis-information, and learning more about both formats.

But, if there is a trend towards more HD DVD fanaticism, the more vocal BD Boys have no one to blame but themselves. There have been numerous times over the past month when I have seriously reconsidered my decision to buy a Sony BD player when they are released, solely because I can't tolerate the arrogant, condescending attitude that keeps surfacing, and I don't really want to do anything that encourages it.

pray tell, who would that be??
