Will there be coveted/rare new format DVD's?
and will we covet and care for the new discs like we do with some DVD's? Hold them in high regard within the new collections like we do with some rare Criterions? and will they command some of the astronomical prices?

You act like SD-DVD was the first format to do this.
There was a little thing called laserdisc. |

Of course it will be hard to say what will be valuable; not a single product has hit stores yet. Counting chickens before the eggs are laid, methinks.

Scott: Seriously, how can anyone answer your question about a product that isn't on the street yet? Answers would be based on speculation and conjecture=a guess
....certainly not facts. |
I would bet on it. That is one of the reasons I think it will be impossible for those of us that get caught up with having the best version to just settle on one format. I almost guarantee Blu Ray and HD DVD will end up with some kind of cool exclusive and in some cases maybe a rare version that gets discontinued.

There are coveted/rate D-VHS tapes, so why not?
|
There are film reels of old movies out there worth tens of thousands of dollars. My assumption is that there will be DVD's that have commentary that is not offered on the new format, therefore making that DVD worth more to some collectors. There will be limited runs of various Next-Gen discs that will be worth more then others, and there will be a $5.50 bin in Wal-Mart full of Blu-Ray and/or HDDVD discs in the next 5 years. I mean, the loser will have to liquidate all those extra discs, so maybe that $5.50 bin will have one or the other sooner then that....

The D-theater tapes are an interesting comparison...but only if either or both of the hd-resolution formats stay a niche market....the limited production runs of the d-theater tapes created their own after market value.

Re: Will there be coveted/rare new format DVD's?
Bumping this because I saw it mentioned in MWB's post. I don't think this ever happened, BUT the only exception I can think of is the All the Goals of World Cup 2006 HD DVD. Supposed to come out as a Blu, but never did.

Re: Will there be coveted/rare new format DVD's?
I hope that one day my Caligula BD will be valuable.

Re: Will there be coveted/rare new format DVD's?
My German Terminator 2 HD DVD is still the best one available. :)

Re: Will there be coveted/rare new format DVD's?
My Japan Band of Brothers HD DVD set is still pretty valuable.

Re: Will there be coveted/rare new format DVD's?
The Third Man goes for at least $50 on Amazon Marketplace now, probably up to twice that much on eBay (one of them has a starting bid of $90).

Re: Will there be coveted/rare new format DVD's?
I'm guessing because it was never released in HD-DVD in the US.

Perceived value comes and goes.
I have an authentic copy of "The Killer" Criterion Collection. Several years ago it used to go for $200-$300 on eBay. Now it's worth about $75 (on a good day). |

Yeah, I was lucky to get The Third Man, once one of us mentioned it, immediately went on Amazon to get it. AMAZING looking Blu. Great features etc. Wonder how the new Blu will compare. Can't top CC I think.
