Will there be coveted/rare new format DVD's?

and will we covet and care for the new discs like we do with some DVD's? Hold them in high regard within the new collections like we do with some rare Criterions? and will they command some of the astronomical prices?

You act like SD-DVD was the first format to do this.

There was a little thing called laserdisc.

Was LaserDisc? I still have some - some that sell for way more than most of my DVDs. I agree - there will end up being valuable HD discs of some sort - but it would be hard to say what would become extra valuable.

Of course it will be hard to say what will be valuable; not a single product has hit stores yet. Counting chickens before the eggs are laid, methinks.

RonBoster 04-12-06 12:30 PM

Scott: Seriously, how can anyone answer your question about a product that isn't on the street yet? Answers would be based on speculation and conjecture=a guess
....certainly not facts.

I would bet on it. That is one of the reasons I think it will be impossible for those of us that get caught up with having the best version to just settle on one format. I almost guarantee Blu Ray and HD DVD will end up with some kind of cool exclusive and in some cases maybe a rare version that gets discontinued.

There are coveted/rate D-VHS tapes, so why not?

GIjon213 04-12-06 06:09 PM

There are film reels of old movies out there worth tens of thousands of dollars. My assumption is that there will be DVD's that have commentary that is not offered on the new format, therefore making that DVD worth more to some collectors. There will be limited runs of various Next-Gen discs that will be worth more then others, and there will be a $5.50 bin in Wal-Mart full of Blu-Ray and/or HDDVD discs in the next 5 years. I mean, the loser will have to liquidate all those extra discs, so maybe that $5.50 bin will have one or the other sooner then that....

RonBoster 04-12-06 09:43 PM

The D-theater tapes are an interesting comparison...but only if either or both of the hd-resolution formats stay a niche market....the limited production runs of the d-theater tapes created their own after market value.

Very True, Bourne Identity had really low production numbers. Most of the D-Theater tapes had at, or under, 2000 of each made.

*crosses fingers for limited run of HD-DVD Salo.

Bumping this because I saw it mentioned in MWB's post. I don't think this ever happened, BUT the only exception I can think of is the All the Goals of World Cup 2006 HD DVD. Supposed to come out as a Blu, but never did.

I hope that one day my Caligula BD will be valuable.

My German Terminator 2 HD DVD is still the best one available. :)

My Japan Band of Brothers HD DVD set is still pretty valuable.

The Third Man goes for at least $50 on Amazon Marketplace now, probably up to twice that much on eBay (one of them has a starting bid of $90).

What makes it valuable as opposed to the US Blu-Ray edition?

I'm guessing because it was never released in HD-DVD in the US.

Perceived value comes and goes.
I have an authentic copy of "The Killer" Criterion Collection.
Several years ago it used to go for $200-$300 on eBay.
Now it's worth about $75 (on a good day).

Less digital noise reduction applied to the transfer, resulting in a superior visible grain structure to the HBO Blu-ray version. The differences are small though, so only die hard HD DVD fans need bother.

I noticed there are a handful of copies of Third Man (BD) on Ebay right now going for $50 + Shipping. There is still a full day left!

I'm happy I was able to snag one at Borders recently for $29.XX

Yeah, I was lucky to get The Third Man, once one of us mentioned it, immediately went on Amazon to get it. AMAZING looking Blu. Great features etc. Wonder how the new Blu will compare. Can't top CC I think.

Likewise. I already had the 2-Disc SDVD, so I wasn't in a hurry to upgrade. As soon as it was announced that it was going OOP, I placed an order at work and snatched it up quick.
