Should I start buying HD movies in the next few months even I don't have a HD DVD player but will get a HD DVD player years later?

I'd suggest not getting titles right now since when the prices for this software will be a lot lower a couple years from now than they will be at launch.

Not too mention, if the HD-DVD format fails and Blu-ray is the norm, you may not be able to watch them 2 years from now.

I'll buy an HD-DVD as a memento, just like I bought a DIVX disc back in the day.

I would only recommend doing it for not well-known titles that may go out of print. For example, Criterions.

Have to agree with Adam. Hold off, prices will drop. No sense in paying a premium for discs that you can't watch.

Just wait until you have a player and start picking them up then.

What if some films don't come out on blueray straight away? I mean back catalog releases, one of my favorite cop films ever is Black Rain, and the dvd transfer is poor, very excited about the HD-Release.

It depends if you really do adore certain films, and you can't wait, and willing to spend.

Black Rain is Paramount. You should see it on both. I can't wait for it either.

So BlackRain is coming out on Blue Ray and HD-DVD? Is this forum gonna be doing a HD-review section for titles soon?

Can I do a Black Rain celebration thread in the movies forum without it being seen as a review? lol, I'm a fanatiic on this film.

You would have been banned from some forums back in the day for that!

Hopefully you bought it as the format was gasping for its last breath.

Why would anyone buy discs for a player they won't have for a couple years?

By that time, we will be discussing 7 DVD's for 49 cents on the Columbia House forum the way we do regular DVD's now.

How about this. Save the money on discs you can't even play. Start saving!!! Buy the player with the format you want around the holidays. Better yet. If possible, milk someone into giving you one as a gift.

Either a Playstation 3 or an HD-DVD player. HD-DVD will probably be around $350 by then. Playstation 3 will launch somewhere in the $400's.

DVD did something similar. They released at $1000 (Blu-Ray), shot down to $500 within a matter of months (HD-DVD), then were available for around $350 in the Christmas of 97/98 (I forget). That's when I received my first Panasonic DVD player as a Christmas gift.

Expect serious price drops on both formats by the holidays. They will have to compete for your dollars and are in a bitter war. Also, expect a better lineup of titles from both by then as well.

Yeah, definitely wait. The format uncertainty makes this even more important than it was with DVD, and they may change those cases too.
