VBulletin can handle "incorrectly nested" tags! i.e. if you enter (without the periods)

[.i][.b]Text here...[./i][./b]

it actually comes out properly, as in bold italic. IIRC, UBB didn't like it when you had your tags incorrectly nested like that.

I don't think VB is doing anything special. It is just that most browsers have now become smarter. If you see the HTML that was generated by your post, you can see that that tags are still nested incorrectly.
