Please deactivate my account

I’m not interested in continuing to support a site that lets right wing trolls post bullshit repeatedly. So long and thanks for all the fish.

I've yet to understand why people spend so much time in Politics. Nothing ever changes, I'd assume.

If IB only had the cajones to close Politics and re-open Adult.

I second this motion. The Politics forum is rampant with vitriol, mockery, trolling, name-calling, generalizing, and pettiness (from all across the political spectrum). Very little substantive discussion goes on there, in my estimation. I don't blame the mods - I think the problems are too big for them to solve and are simply indicative of the political climate in our society now.

Completely agree with your assessment. I asked to be put on Political Exile so at least now I can't see the posts anymore. It looks as if Supermallet is already there, so he should be fine going forward.

The problem is, he doesn't want to be in exile. He just doesn't want trolls trolling the forum, or if they do, feels he should be able to call them out on it.

If not, he doesn't want to support the forum. I get it. I really do, but I'd be sorry to see him leave over this.

Consider sticking around in the movies and HD sections, Super.

We do not delete accounts or posts at the member's request, as doing so could potentially cause confusing "gaps" in discussion threads. However, we could remove your information from the system so you will no longer receive notifications or have access to the account. Please keep in mind that once an account is deactivated it can not be recovered.

Curious, did the mods delete Supermallet's last post there, or did he? I thought it was an important post, and if that was the hill he was going to die on, we should all be able to see it.

Re: Please deactivate my account

My two cents: Forums in general are dying as people have been moving to social media. It's sad to see people who have been participating for years, like Supermallet, leaving or being suspended/banned because 2-4 members who are being allowed to troll at best/ be racist/xenophobic/anti-semitic at worst. These trolls are experts at doing hit and runs not only in the political forum, but also in other ones, like the movie forum (Ghostbusters and Captain Marvel threads come to mind) and when members like Supermallet respond to their inane comments, they get punished instead of the troll. My point here is that the trolls are costing the forum users/members. I understand that mods/admin don't want an echo chamber, but at the same time they shouldn't be tolerating trolling from the other side of the aisle. At the end of the day, the forum suffers and sooner rather than later, it will go the way of MySpace.

That's possible, but not all people (especially older peeps like me) are on social media. DVDTalk is about as close as I've gotten.

Some people post nonsensical comments in threads. It's not against the rules. We're not going to purge posters from the forum because of their political views.

So we aren't allowed to call them trolls for posting nonsense then?

I don't go to Politics. Every time I've ever ventured in there I've been sorry I did and I find me asking myself why did I ever think it would be worthwhile to peek inside when it's nothing but a horror show in there. A hasty retreat is all I'll ever do in the Political forum. I'm glad it's separate from Other.

Please don't go. Just take a break for a few months. Meditate.

Choose your battles. An old piece of advice is: Never get into a fight with a pig. You'll get covered in shit and the pig enjoys it.

Thank you. I’ve made no secret that I’m Jewish, and my wife is an ethnic minority. We are exactly the people that fascists target. I’m very sensitive to issues regarding minorities. Time and again, right wing/conservative trolls have been able to camp out in the politics forum and spew hateful bile and when people react negatively, it’s the people reacting who get in trouble.

Creekdipper compared homosexuality to bestiality for years. He even advocated for a “separate but equal” system to keep homosexuals away from Christian business owners. He spent years antagonizing people over and over with no significant repercussions until finally he did something to push things over the line. People complained for years, nothing was done. He was able to say the most hurtful and hateful things in that time.

Grundle was allowed to blanket repost right wing blogs to his heart’s content. Most of the articles grossly misrepresented the situations or arguments being presented. He never showed any remorse or inclination to change his behavior, no matter how often he was chastised or suspended. The admins even let him come back and post under a second account for a while for some reason. His posts routinely contained racist, sexist, and Islamophobic content. He made jokes and posted memes about Heather Heyer’s death at the hands of a neo-Nazi. Only recently was he exiled.

DVD Polizei has been a Trump supporter since day one. He has actively downplayed any idea that Trump is a white supremacist. He has defended Proud Boys, the very people who would beat me and my wife in the streets just for being who we are. And yet I get scolded for pointing out that he defends fascists and routinely trolls the forum.

And those are just the most visible right wing trolls. I don’t want an echo chamber, despite what some people may think, but when our president is an open white supremacist and tacitly supports hate groups, things are no longer business as usual. And when we have people posting on this forum who actively support Trump for this behavior, and actively support the hate groups he has popularized, that’s where we should be drawing a fucking line. And if the mods and admins won’t do it, then I have no interest in continuing to be associated with this site. Continuing to platform fascists or fascists sympathizers represents a legitimate danger for some of the people who post here. People can be doxxed. I’ve met people from here in real life. I’m not comfortable with that anymore given how apathetic the mods have been to these issues.

This is why I’m not interested in political exile. Either DVD Talk takes a stance against fascists and the people who defend them, or they can ban me.

If it is trolling, use the report this post feature. Or PM one of the mods.

But you just demonstrated with these 2 post the bigger issue here. And please don't feel that I'm piling on you, it's simply that you are actually one of the few mods having a discussion on this thread. People are telling you that these posters are an issue because they are trolling and they cross the line, but you are dismissing them as nonsensical. I don't know what actually goes behind the scenes here when people report posts, so I don't know how many times these notorious posters have been reported for their trolling and I know even less if you are communicating with them behind the scenes to stop the shit so to speak. The way many of us are looking as this situation is that a notorious member will write a borderline offensive post, then someone responds to it in what could be constructed a personal attack and then the mods/admins suspend the person who responded but not the one with the trolling post. As Supermallet elocuently explained, what you may perceive as a nonsensical post may be an offensive one to someone with a different background. If it was only one person complaining about these same members it would be one thing, but the reality is that there's a majority of members that feel uncomfortable /offended/etc by post from these members and truly, we feel that nothing is done to them. So I'm with Supermallet on this.

Re: Please deactivate my account

I read the exchange between Mallet and DVDP and it was totally fucking obvious that DVDp was baiting Mallet. That's usually DVDP's MO, though, and everyone knows it - mods included. He says stupid rightwing-facsist bullshit. When someone calls him on his stupidity he then waits hours or days before replying to some other bullshit that happened hours or days before and never acknowledges the original response to the original post.

Oh, and just remember that AOC is a whore because she's a beautiful and accomplished Latina woman. That one was icing on the cake.

I was shocked that, given his track record, he wasn't permanently banned after that.

And I know, shame on me for taking the bait, but again, when I see someone defending Proud Boys, I’m not going to be quiet about it.

And yeah, the AOC whore comment was completely inexcusable. I think I even reported that one but here he remains, continuing to spew his alt-right garbage.

My issue here isn’t just with DVD P. It’s with the extremely lax attitude the mods and admins have toward members who post things that are overtly bigoted or clear distortions. If I wanted that shit I’d go read the comments section of a Breitbart article.

Re: Please deactivate my account

Anyway, are those sited by Super only the extreme offenders? Are there others on the right, more apt to have be less troll-ish? I'm not in there so I'm sure if they are being kept around because they are condusive to keeping things actively moving? Is it possible to have a two-sided discussion if the trolls were banned/exiled?
