Thread Title Length - increase?

Is there any particular reason why thread titles are capped at however many characters they are? Can we bump it up a bit? Just wondering. Maybe from 85 to 125?

Would be nice to increase the characters, within a limit of course.

Met you in the middle at 105 and we can see. Is there much reason to have an entire (old) Twitter post as a thread title?

Thanks! Let's hope it doesn't come to that ;)

Why in the world do we need thread titles at 100+ characters?

Re: Thread Title Length - increase?

Because it's a free country, and 85 characters is an impediment on our basic freedoms!!

Good point. Carry on...

Now please adjust the column width to accomodate the increased characters... you can always reduce the amount of wasted space in the Last Post column

Yeah, I've been hoping for a formatting update for this. Last Post has WAY too wide a column. With everything left-justified and the ad bar on the right, I'm always looking to the far left of my screen when browsing.

Can you guys give me an example of where the increased characters are an issue? I can adjust those myself, but reformatting has to go through tech.

Re: Thread Title Length - increase?

They aren't saying it's a new issue, it's just that it all looks cramped with the column spacing. And with longer thread titles it makes each line thicker for wrapping (so you get less on a screen).

This is the "New Posts" page, but in the main page of a forum the "Last Post" column has a lot of extra space in it too.

I'm still not entirely clear on why longer thread titles were desired. Seems like a solution in search of a problem. Then again, I don't start threads very often.

^ I had a thread idea (not the one I started, but one in Politics that I still haven't made, and may not bother) that I couldn't figure out a shorter thread title for. Other forums I visit have like a 200-character limit. 85 just seemed archaically short.

Honestly didn't think anyone would bitch about it  but this is DVDTalk dot com.

Keep yellin' at the clouds, boys.

If my relatively innocuous comment that even allowed for the fact that I don't hit the use case very often can objectively be considered "bitching" then I think all hope for discussion on forums is pretty much lost. ;)

Nah, bitching was a bad word to use. I just meant the general resistance (in this thread and the one in Other) on the topic was a bit of a surprise, but I should have known better. It was also a bit of a surprise that IBJoel ran with it so quickly, but hey, that's just good customer service!

"Passive aggressive questioning" would've been more accurate phrasing - at least in the case of my post. -ptth-
