I'm not a fan of the huge ass ads.

Re: Jan. 3rd 2019 Upgrade Master Thread

For the most part, for me, doesn't seem as bad as others see. I'm using a Chromebook, for reference. I like having forum jump menus at the top and bottom.

Lately, when I finished a thread, it would not "mark it as read" (i.e. unbold thread title). I was hoping the upgrade would fix it, but still the same. Maybe just me?

I don't use the mobile version and am not cool with the increased number of ads making browsing and posting so tedious.

There needs to be a quick jump at the top of the forum page. I hate having to scroll to the bottom or using that forum selector at the top.

Suggestion on formatting. Maybe reduce the column sizes for Replies, Last Post, and Views to allow for more room for Thread title so it doesn't drop to a 2nd line?

Working on it. I handle the reviews as well and we knew the backend would mess up (I talked to the reviewers about it), but the text disappearing was a surprise.

Re: Jan. 3rd 2019 Upgrade Master Thread

Lots of justified negativity in this thread. With that said, I'll throw in a couple of positive comments:
  • I like the somewhat cleaner/flatter aesthetic.
  • I like the clearer division of sticky threads and normal threads.

That's about all I can say that's very positive.
  • Registered users should see significantly fewer and less intrusively-placed ads than unregistered users. Registered users are the ones providing content in the forums that may drive unregistered users here. Let the lurkers pay the higher advertisement tax.
  • Registered users should have the option to pay a fee for an ad-free site that doesn't have jacked up formatting.

It appears that you are using the desktop version on your mobile device. While this is technically usable, it is not optimized or supported and it's encouraged you use the mobile view (scroll to the bottom of the main forum index)

Another site I used to frequent did that, but at least they gave you the option of closing that space once you're logged in. Just having it there without the ability to do anything about it is the worst possible thing you could've done for DVD Talk. WTF is 3" of white space? Just leave the ads at the top where they used to be, this just looks dumb as shit.

Tech is working on fixing that. In the meantime, try bypassing your cache. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipe...ass_your_cache

Any way to get rid of the footer bar at the bottom of the page (the thing that allows you to navigate pages, jump, etc)?
My notebooks resolution is 1366 x 768, and that footer takes away from my limited screen real estate and with the white-space on the right - it really makes me feel even more claustrophobic.

That is the standard layout for all VB sites. They have always been on the right. What's your device, browser, and are you in desktop or mobile skin?

A lot of people use their home computers to access this site, you CAN'T leave them behind, they'll just stop coming here.

Yeah, Admins are an "ads-free" usergroup, but we should have a few, still. The ad kinks are being worked out (the white space, banner ads, etc)

But in seriousness, Tech is working on ad delivery issues, which should address this.

I miss having the random new reviews pop up at the top. I read more reviews this way than actually searching for reviews or going to the review section.

That's on me. We've been down a person in the department and holidays actually have an increased workload. I should be starting up the newsletter (and thus the headlines up top) again this upcoming week.

There are. Just look at the first post on this thread. Just take off the infinity scroll. In my opinion, having that turned off should be automatic and you have to turn it on instead of off.

At the end of the day, I don't see how this "update" improves anything and brings more users to this site.

You seem to understand what’s going on perfectly. The site doesn’t draw in nearly as much traffic as it used to, and that’s for a multitude of reasons, but IB at this point are clearly attempting to squeeze whatever juice is left before the site is completely dead.

I'm going to let it grow on me a bit. If you're worried about the panic button, Alt-tab does just as good a job if you're going to get found out by the boss. I'd like the font to be a little bigger on the post typing screen. This old bastard has trouble seeing small things these days (no dick jokes please).

Yeah, I recall people complaining regularly about not upgrading the site for so long. I always liked the simplicity of the old site, and with IB adding/fixing things like embeds all the functionality I wanted was there.

Honestly, after using it for half a day it's not that bad. Maybe it's just the way I browse the site using back/forward mouse buttons to click around rather then drop downs and what not, but functionally there's not a major difference for me. If the formatting and white space was cleaned up, it would be just fine. I'd prefer less ads, or relocating them somehow, or maybe the forum being centered in some way rather then the right side ads making the site look skewed, but otherwise I don't completely hate it.

Think of it like the video game industry. They’re always inventing new ways to separate you from the money your wallet… sometimes their ideas work, sometimes they don’t. When an idea DOESN’T work, does that mean they’ve learned a lesson? That they won’t come up with yet other ways to make you want to spend money above the initial $60 price point? No… it just makes them go back to the drawing board and find new means.

This isn’t a commentary about Joel or anything, but rather the company itself. I know his hands are tied on a lot of this stuff and he’s really just the mouthpiece and relay. But, man, this site is clearly fading away and it seems other users in this thread are noticing the same thing. It’s truly sad. I love DVDTalk, but everything that’s being going on as of late is just too much for my poor heart to handle.
