Aren’t they still illegal in the United States?
And haven’t users been banned for posting about them?

I saw that too. Almost questioned if it was a spam post....because it reads exactly like a spam post.
Wait, so now the tread is locked and listed as "sponsored". Are we going to start seeing sponsored advertisements as normal threads/stickied threads now????
If DVD rippers are cool now (and we can apparently list new movies to "rip"?!) should I assume it's also cool if we start discussing the T word?

This does seem extremely odd and terribly inconsistent with forum policy that's been around forever.
Edited to add: if something has changed, this sticky should probably be deleted:
https://forum.dvdtalk.com/tech-talk/...-material.html
Either that, or IBJoel should be banned.

ABSOLUTELY NO:
• Posting requests for copies of copyrighted material, or "how-to-get/make bootleg material" (including ripping) instructions.
• Anything that violates the trademark or copyright of another company including anything that may violate the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

Wasn't there a recent court decision that allowed users to defeat copyright protection on their owned products? I'm pretty sure ripping your own DVDs has been ruled legal.
It became an issue because many of the well-heeled were putting their entire collections on home servers.

This has always been a bit of a "do as I say, not as I do" kinda place.

These haven't been taken down either so it looks like IB is up for a full scale discussion of DVD/Blu ripping going forward...

Sweet. So I'm good if I start up a thread discussing torrent trackers?

Hi guys, this was a discussion I had with our sales team and this is not the first time we've done ads for similar services. I basically came back from the weekend and this was already arranged. It's a rare occurrence and should not be construed as DVDTalk's or IB's endorsement of these products (the only reason I personally posted it is because we do not have Nativo ad capabilities on this site).

So....is this a topic we can discuss now or no? Cause that would open up a whole new section for us to discuss regarding torrents/kodi/plex...etc.

To me, this is reaching. Just because it shows up in an doesn't mean it's open to start threads about stuff that's against forum rules.
Plus I never look at the ads. I wouldn't know until someone brings it up.

Problem is, this wasn't an add. An Admin made a sticky'd thread post basically trying to sell us the DVD Ripper. If it had been posted by a new member, it would have been flagged as spam and removed immediately.

And not just any admin, but one employed by the owners of the site.

Without being too specific, because you know... rules... but the competing product mentioned disparagingly in the ad is, I'm told, the best product for any such activity endorsed by the ad itself. And it's free.

TFW your paid add drives more business to the competitor you tried to burn in your add!!

The logical thing would be to remove those threads, except for you know, $$$!

Yeah, I'm a bit slow on the uptake sometimes.
In my defense, I don't visit that subforum very much these days, and I rarely search for new posts, I just sort of wander aimlessly around here.

My banner was just an add for this and specifically mentioned getting around region coding as a feature. Amazing times we're in...
Hopefully we can start sharing private torrent tracker invites soon!
