DVD Talk rubbing ads for right wing candidates?

 Yeah, that would be TERRIBLE!

Does Internet Brands think it’s acceptable to be running ads for right wing candidates with everything that’s going on right now? Surely IB can tailor the types of ads run on their sites.

If it makes you feel better, I just got an ad for Rachel Roberts, a Democrat candidate for the Kentucky State Senate.

I am guessing that DVDTalk/IB isn’t running these ads as such. It looks like they’re using an ad service that drops ads based on location, and that the political candidates have bought banner ads through those services, and that’s why they’re showing up.

In management's defense, those ads have had a very long day and their shoulders are tight.

The ads are contextual and based on other things you look at (especially on your iPhone).

Not long ago I was on tumblr talking about horse cards in Magic:The Gathering and then a few minutes later came here and there was an ad for horse boarding services.

Why wouldn't it be "acceptable"?

Right now I'm looking at an ad for Rosetta Stone. I did a Google search for that about 2 weeks ago.

CNN runs Conservative ads.

Fox News runs Liberal ads.

It's all about money...and hey, Freedom of Speech.

You don't want Freedom of Speech? Not surprised.

It's also perfectly in line with their TOS, if you actually read it (lemme break it down: you're a user and can be hit with any ad). Not to mention, they can run any ad they want (navigation issues are another problem and thread). It's their site. What are you going to do...protest and/or boycott DVD Talk and NOT post in Politics Forum?

Oh my, that would be a shame. A tragedy on a Shakespearean comedic level.

Supermallet, you're way too triggered. Talk to a doctor, please.

P.S. Since the ads are contextual and you allow cookies on your browser (?)...maybe stop going to Conservative websites and visit Liberal websites more often.

It’s an ad. Just ignore it like I do with many others and carry on with your day. Seems like a simple solution.

Yeah, I posted it. If Draven posted it, the comment would have probably read something like :

And I have ZERO problem with that ad. It's not at all offensive. Hope it made IB a tiny bit of money. I just thought it was funny. And it must have worked -- I voted!

Yeah, that's not it. I do go to CNN.com and NBCnews.com so maybe just the news stuff set it off? The joys of living in one of the few deep purple states.

From what I understand, the politicians are the ones who rub you.

Or grab you.

Because currently Trump and politicians like him are promoting political violence and encouraging racism/sexism/anti-semitism.

Re: DVD Talk rubbing ads for right wing candidates?

I don't see any of that in the advertisement. It doesn't say "Jews will not replace us! Vote Republican!"

And as it's been stated, it is based on individual browsing. I see ads for things I don't like all the time and ignore it.

Josh and milo have it right. It's partly contextual from other history and partly because our ad providers select ads based on demo information they know about our sites. We ARE actually trying to cut down on the political ads (we had another site where we heard this). They should be at the very least, less frequent now.

The ad supports Trump, Trump espouses racism/sexism/anti-semitism, ergo the ad implicitly supports those things.

Thank you for listening. I’m fine with cutting down on all political ads. We get inundated with that stuff enough as it is.

:eyebrow: So - he has been "rubbing" at conservative web sites?

Stay on topic please -- this is a technical thread about ads appearing, not a political debate.

I’m curious about “rubbing ads.”

Is it some new slang term the kids are using that I don’t know about?

Is it a typo?

Is it one of the mods playing around? (Groucho?)

Or does Supermallet have a cold?

VinVega 11-05-18 09:39 PM

Re: DVD Talk rubbing ads for right wing candidates?

I'm pretty sure rubbing occurs when you hit a "b" instead of an "n" when typing rubbing.

Re: DVD Talk rubbing ads for right wing candidates?

It may have been an autocorrect I didn’t notice since I browse this site exclusively from my phone.

Re: DVD Talk rubbing ads for right wing candidates?

Well, the democrats flipped that Nevada Senate seat, so it doesn’t look like that ad was effective.
