Why is...

DVD Count a censored word? (when as one word)

Trevor 12-12-09 07:43 AM

see what I did there?

Why do
Spoiler:
people use ambiguous thread titles, especially when the entire post would have fit in the title?
Spoiler:
It just wastes people's time, sort of like these useless spoilers.

To answer your question, that company spammed the forum once iirc.

I trust the admins to know but it read to me that it was just someone that had used the site. Was in one of the massive threads where people were looking around for replacement sites for DVDSpot right?

I could be wrong, but if my limited memory serves, I might have been partially responsible for Count being banned.

When Spot died (I'm still freaking pissed about that. Why did thy shut it down? What are the doing with the database? Nothing. At least they should have offered it around or given us users more warning and a better way to save our data.) I found Count and was pretty impressed. I struck up a brief dialogue with the guy, and mentioned all the frustrated users complaining about it here at DVDTalk. Well, he went a bit overboard and posted several messages advertising his site. Also, the site might have Amazon referral payments for him, right? That's a no-no here of course.

I could be wrong on all that, but I think it was Count.

Didn't know that. That would explain it.

Just to be safe, im putting what I have to say under a spoiler (if it matters), so I don't chance getting in trouble here.

Spoiler:
I believe he was, as was the guy from Glyde as well. Such a shame though cause I do use both sites. Glyde is pretty nice, and im finding DVD Count to be a pretty good online replacement for DVDSpot. It started out rough but is getting better I think. (Thats just my personal opinion though at least).

I thought they were actually pretty friendly about it. That they were adding alternatives rather than spamming. But maybe im wrong on that, and regardless of being friendly about it, the end result was that they were using DVD Talk as a medium, regardless of them both being free sites.

Re: Why is...

FYI, you can still get in trouble for stuff in a spoiler. But you aren't saying anything objectionable.

I think the main problem was that you can't promote things here where you get referral bonuses.

Those sites might be 'free', but the people that run them get money from referral links on every item on their sites.

Yes, they were coming here to help, and other people posting similar referral things like e***a*t*e*s might not be trying to make money, but the rule has to be in place I imagine, and enforced whenever they see a referral link of any kind.

Thank you, I didn't realize that. I just didn't want to make it seem like I was trying to promote these sites (hence the spoiler) even though I use them and think they are great sites; For me personally anyways.

Its a shame that they weren't able to abide by the rules :(

Question, Skyclad01... did you censor your signature link or did DVDTalk?

I think the forum did automatically.

DVDTalk automatically censored the URL... Said it was a bad word.

Isn't that just a little extreme?

I think that would vary from person to person. I understand them banning them as they were posters who broke the forum rules, so in that sense, its not too extreme.

With it being a blocked link in my signature. It may seem a little extreme, specially since of 3 online collection sites, 2 are blocked here. But those 2 broke the rules, and the 3rd one, DVDAF is a collection site that I never could get into at the time and right now, im not up to logging in 300 DVD's there just to have as a signature link.

But thats their rules.
