Sub-forum for Challenges?

Ok, this isn't a request yet, but over the years it has been mentioned a few times, and there seem to be some good reasons for moving all the various Challenge threads to their own sub-forum.

But before we decide that this might be something that we want, is it even an option? I know it's a big decision and maybe a tough process to create a new subforum.

So can we get some mod/admin/IB input before we waste time even thinking about it?

Do you really think they clutter up any of the forums?

The users of this site have spoken, and we all wanted a Political Film forum. But this? I don't think so.

Not right now, but we have four more Challenges in development, and soon there will probably be at least one per month.

Also, there is some talk of each participant getting their own list thread, to promote further discussion.

And again, this was just a preliminary question, hoping to get some feedback from the admins/IB.

-biggrin- Methinks that admins should not be conflated with IB.

I vote "Yes" for a Challenge sub-forum.

DVDTalk Challenges are a long standing tradition here at DVDTalk. They are basically set up as a group of threads where DVDTalkers are challenged to watch 100 films of a certain genre in a month, and discuss.

It started with a Horror Challenge in 2005, and we are now up to eight current Challenges. Thirty to eighty of us usually sign up, and participate in those threads all month, talking about the movies we watched, the genre, the process of marathon watching, and whatever else.

They foster a strong sense of community. In fact, before I found the Challenges, I only thought of DVDTalk as an information source, coming here for personal benefit only. After participating in a Challenge here, I started to feel like this was actually a community of fellow DVD fans, and I started actually participating here and providing information instead of just reading it.

Each Challenge may generate multiple threads. For example, in the soon to start Horror Challenge, there will be at least 34 different threads devoted to it. Planning thread, a discussion thread or three, list thread, and 31 individual film discussion threads.

Re: Sub-forum for Challenges?

I would say your post is a great argument for keeping the challenges in their parent forums. People will undoubtedly stumble onto them if they're mixed in with other threads. Whereas, if you keep them tucked away in a subforum, only people that only know about them will venture in (for the most part).

Call me crazy, but I don't remember there being 34 different threads last year when the horror challenge was going on. I remember 1...the actual challenge thread.

There were 6 threads for the Horror Challenge last year. A planning thread, two discussion threads, a list thread, a results thread, and a 31 days discussion thread. This year, the 31 days discussion thread will be split into individual title threads.

Re: Sub-forum for Challenges?

And again, the only reason we'd ever possibly want a sub-forum is if we go to individual threads for each participant's list, which could number 80 or more threads right there.

I don't follow the Horror Challenge, but why are you guys splitting up the 31 days discussion into different threads?

Spoilers. People don't want to go into a thread discussing 31 different movies when they've only seen some of them.

Even if, and this would never happen, everyone used spoiler tags, the emails don't use them so it would spoil a lot of films for people.

Re: Sub-forum for Challenges?

Well if there are going to be separate threads for each day then it might need a sub-forum. There's only room for 35 threads on the front page of the forum now (taking stickies into account), and if the general list thread gets stickied that's 34, and the discussion thread will almost always be on the first page so that's 33.

The 31 films threads will be in the reviews and recommendations subforum, one per day.

Don't litter the forums with 35 different threads. If you're going to do a challenge, do it in one thread.

Seriously. People will hate you.

I know Lemmy's post isn't worth a response, but are you serious Tarantino?

Litter the forum? If a bunch of us choose to review/discuss 31 specific films, we can't start one thread per day? In the slow as molasses reviews subforum?

Isn't the purpose of this forum DVD discussion? Do you, or a majority of DVDTalkers, have to like a thread before it gets started? What makes our discussions less worthwhile than any thread you've ever started?

One thread per day aiming for legitimate discussion of a film/DVD. Litter the forum? Seriously?

Have to agree with this. How does that litter the forum?

I think a Challenge sub-forum would be a good idea, but I barely post, so I'll be quiet now :)

Re: Sub-forum for Challenges?

I don't think they are a problem, yet. If there are multiple challenges going on at one time, which may never happen, that could be an issue.

As it stands, I might be more interested in these challenges, if I can read what people are saying about each movie separately. Going through the giant challenge thread is kind of a pain.
