I'm guessing there will be an option to keep your collection private or only make it available to certain users.

I had a DVDSpot account and I WOULD most likely use a DVDTalk service, assuming it's economical and very similar to DVDSpot. I just don't like the layout of many of the online services that are available now.

I currently use the free version of DVD Profiler, which pretty much means I can only add or subtract movies from my collection and view it only on that computer. I liked the ability to maintain my collection online from ANY computer. If DVD Profiler offered that feature, I would probably upgrade. But since I spend so much time at DVD Talk, I'd rather have my collection here.

Also, one of the things I liked about DVD Profiler was the ability to print your collection by title only. In DVDSpot, you had to just print the internet page "as-is" with everything else on the page.

Just my $0.02

I voted yes I'd try it (not using a service at the moment) but I also strongly second the idea of a music add-on to go along with it.

Yeah, I'd go along with that too, but I'd be happy too if they started off with movies first just to test the waters.

I currently use Collectorz for CDs. It's decent, but like DVD Profiler, I can only access it from ONE computer.

It's not the % that we care about, it's the total number of people who would use it. Sure the data will be skewed, but not it a way that'll matter.

Correct, and that's because we're trying to get basic numbers so that we gauge that.

Variable x: the cost to develop it.
Variable y: the number of people who will use it.

If we know those, we'll be able to figure out what the required return would be to warrant devoting resources to the project. If that means that we'd have to have a pricepoint that's unrealistically high, then we would have to scrap the thing.

That being said, you also have to take into consideration people who are not currently a member, but did use DVDSpot that would join DVDTalk just to use the catalog system.

Are you thinking of offering this for free with the plan to make money through referral links and additional advertising, or is this going to be a premium-only feature? I suspect that will influence the answers. It's easy for people to say "sure, I'd use it!" but that might change if it requires a $20 automatically-renewing annual subscription for premium membership, especially when the established DVD Profiler is only $30 for life.

Then again it might increase premium memberships since many members here felt that the features included currently are NOT worth the membership. Add those features with a catalog system and then some members WILL feel it's worth it.

I'll gladly renew my subscription if DVD Talk adds a DVD catalog system similar to DVD Spot.

I would never end a sentence with a preposition

i would try this if it was there.

i use profiler and have dvdpedia on my mac, but i can't really put my collection online the way i want to with either.

Re: DVDSpot Users.... Where ya at?

I used DVD Spot, and use DVDAf. The best thing about DVD Spot was the linked collection statistics - most popular directors, actors, actresses, producers, production years, etc. You'd have to include similar features for me to be interested. Also, as someone else mentioned, I'd have to be able to import my collection quickly and painlessly.

I used DVDSpot and now use DVDAf and Glyde (when I have a chance to update it) and would gladly give up both if DVDTalk made one even the least bit similar to the godly-DVDSpot.

Re: DVDSpot Users.... Where ya at?

I'd only be interested if there were more than just movies, as another poster mentioned (books, video games, etc).

Reasons:

#1.) DVDSpot sucked compared to DVDProfiler.
#2.) DVDProfiler is $30 for life, versus a $20 recurring annual fee.
#3.) Somehow I don't see this turning out better than Profiler.

Re: DVDSpot Users.... Where ya at?

I tried several cataloguing systems and DVDSpot was my favorite. I would jump on a DVDSpot-esque system here at DVDTalk in a heartbeat!

I did enjoy DVDProfiler's offline capabilities though. I'd love a feature like that implemented here.

I had signed up for DVDSpot but never used it. I've had a DVDAF account for awhile but got lazy as far as updates, but i've been meaning to get around to catching it up.

I would use DVDTalk if they had a catalog.

I voted...and I would definitely use it. It would have to include Blu's, of course, since that is all I own.

I would definitely use it, assuming it had a very similar design, interface, and database as DVDSpot had. I'm still searching to find a replacement that I truly like.

I would use it if it is included in the membership. Nothing good is free.

That's why we loved DVD Spot.

So, theoretically, if this idea were to take off, when would we see its launch?

I honestly don't have an answer for that...

Re: DVDSpot Users.... Where ya at?

If you offered a service that had roughly the same features that DVDspot had (like custom filters, sort options, etc.) I would definitely consider reentering my 3000 titles again. I'm currently using DVDAF, which is pretty weak compared to Spot, but I had previously entered most of my titles before I discovered Spot and won't do it again unless the functionality is there.

This was also my favorite thing about DVDSpot, keeping track of what I watched. I especially liked that the watched list wasn't tied to one's owned list, so I could also keep track of rentals, etc.

If you guys replicate that functionality, I'm in!

Yes, I would be interested if it was free. And I mean freely available to everyone and not only to premium members ...at no cost.
