The "first post" thingie-balloon-thing

I really hate the little "thought-balloon"-type-thing that pops out whenever the cursor is over a thread title. It often happens to pop up RIGHT WHERE I'M READING another thread title.

Does anyone else hate this "feature" of the [new & improved, NOT] DVDTalk?

Or, do you like it? Or does it not matter to ya?

I guess I should have been more direct in my original post....if you like it (or even if you hate it), how about WHY you feel that way....?

And more importantly, can I turn the damned "feature" off?!?!

Re: The "first post" thingie-balloon-thing

I like having a little preview of the OP before I click on it. Sometimes I dont know what the thread is about and the little balloon lets you know. I can see how some people dont like it, but if we had the choice I'd have it turned on.

It is indeed infuriating, a far greater distraction that the auto titles in posts which has generated much conversation. I honestly can not believe nobody has mentioned it before this. I suppose it wouldn't be so bad if it only popped up when the cursor was actually on the link of the thread, but is shows up all the time. It makes it difficult to view the various titles, which I can do without moving the cursor. Let me turn it off at least.

I've noticed it, and I think I'll like it once I get used to it. You can call it laziness if you want, but I like the idea of previewing the initial post to save myself from clicking into a thread that I have no interest in (blame it on some vague thread titles, I suppose).

I've never noticed it before, but I like it. I would prefer it if it only occurred when you hover over the actual link like Pharoh suggested.

Re: The "first post" thingie-balloon-thing

Yeah, that would be better. If my cursor is in white space, I shouldn't get any annoying pop-ups.

And so help me if you implement some kind of Java PHP crap for clicking on thread titles. When I open a thread in a new tab, I don't want it opening in the current window, as well, just because it registered a click! Too many changes can have a negative affect...

Re: The "first post" thingie-balloon-thing

I do not like it, but I probably use the forum different than most as I'm mostly on my User CP with subscribed threads and I don't need to see them popup.

When I do go fishing for new threads to read, the title is enough to get me in there when I'll read it the OP anyway.

I can see how others would like it, but I wouldn't mind being able to turn it off.

I have seen this on a different site and got to the point where I stopped going to that site as much because it bothered me so much. Now it's here. Please make it stop, or tell us how to turn it off.

I don't mind it.. I kind of like it. I actually just used it prior to coming to this thread.

So far the only forum changes that annoy me are the underlined text ads that make an annoying balloon pop up... but I realize there is a separate thread for that.

I don't mind it either. It was annoying at first but whatever.

I don't mind it. I think I could possibly like it. But I think it'd be useful if it was just for hovering over the link instead of the table cell

it would be ok if they reduced the area that triggered it otherwise it's annoying

I change my vote from "it's fine" to this. ^

I still think it sucks. And what would it be called, anyway, if I wanted to post a poll about it? "Balloon-thingy" sounds like something you might find over on X-Critic, lol.

Tooltip.

Re: The "first post" thingie-balloon-thing

There isn't an easy way to move them to the linked text so that they only display when hovering over the link. However, if you use firefox, you can easily turn them off:

http://www.tipstrs.com/tip/2337/Turn...ips-in-Firefox

For the time being, I'll turn them from 300 characters to 200, which should make them less intrusive but allow the people who like them to continue to use them.

That sounds like something you'd find at Xcritic, too.

Be careful what you wish for ...

That works! Thanks!!

edited to add: Okay, it works too well - it stops all the other toolbar popup thingies that I use. FYI for anyone else trying it. I turned it back on. *sigh*

Yeah, I hate it.

Doesn't really bother me much. In fact, it helps with deciphering some of the more cryptic thread titles.
