It seems to just hit certain people at certain times. I'm not sure what the logic behind it is.

Testing to see if it's viable to roll out for everyone, more likely.

Hey, I fuckin HATE this shit. It's annoying and looks shitty. I'm a paying member now. It seems my Firefox was avoiding it but now it's all over the place.

How much more can I pay per year to have this shit killed when I'm visiting dvdtalk?

Are you running the NoScript extension? I haven't seen a contextual ad anywhere on the whole internet since I switched over to Firefox (w/NoScript) about five years ago.

And I fully agree about contextual advertising. It's lame and annoying and, most of all, it's not even good advertising. It's going to do nothing buy piss off your potential customers and drive viewers away from the sites that use it. It's not a good deal for anybody.

No I don't use that but I'm going to look into it. Anyway, I don't know what happened. It was on full tilt over this weekend then it went away. I don't see it now.
I'm guessing they were testing...

I make the following observations/comments as a longterm DVDTalker rather than in any quasi-official capacity:

The one and only time I ever saw contextual advertising was when I approached the forums via a search site.

My understanding is that if you arrive here either by typing in the URL http://forum.dvdtalk.com, or by using a direct bookmark/favourite, you shouldn't see contextual advertising.

If anyone is seeing it but didn't arrive by way of a search site, posting the full details here might elicit something by way of an official reply.

(No promises, mind you, because I am not in a position to promise anything).

Well, I just started seeing contextual ads, and I arrived from a bookmark as always. For example, one post I just read mentioned creditcards which became an ad.

ETA: Though it doesn't look like it's happening here.

ETA 2: And it's showing up in this thread for me -- in post 105, "Firefox" is linkified and brings up a BestBuy ad, and in 106 "Internet" brings up an AMD ad.

Kontera's coming up again. I think the issue is I first visited the site w/out logging in. Now I am logged in and still get these.

Re: Contextual Advertising on DVD Talk

Eventually it goes away. The issue is doing a search and getting to the site without logging in. Once you log in, Kontera sticks around for a bit. After a few days, it went away.

It's only startling because I thought it was a virus.

I've never got these before but they started up today. "Bonnie Franklin," "Documentary," "Pancreatic Cancer."

Each link takes a bit of my soul away.

Re: Contextual Advertising on DVD Talk

It'd be one thing if they made sense, but the contextual ad link for "home theater equipment" (on the front page, no less), takes you to a site for lawn mowers. So dumb.

Rectumfy? Damn near killedify.

Also have this annoying crap.

Even "Contextual Adverising" is hyperlinked. Delightful.
