Can we remove AdultTalk from the Dropdown menu?

Since AdultTalk is now XCritic, can we remove the AdultTalk link from the drop down menu on the bottom of pages? I use that to navigate to SportsTalk all the time and have minor panic attacks when I misclick while at the office.

Thank you for your consideration oh wise and omnipotent (and surprisingly sexy) leaders.

Ranger 07-05-08 05:48 PM

There's still that separated link at the top drop-down.

But yeah, was the deal that the new owners had to keep the 'adult' - xcritic link here?

lordwow 07-05-08 07:17 PM

For once, I agree with matta.

bwvanh114 07-05-08 07:32 PM

xcritic is not affiliated with dvdtalk right? So those links should be removed.

Nick Danger 07-05-08 08:32 PM

It's reasonable to assume that the link there is part of Geoff's contract with IB.

The top dropdown menu has the nifty divider lines, and I think that's sufficient. However, in the bottom Forum Jump menu, it's right next to Sports. It should be in a separate subsection, like so:

General Discussions
--Tech Talk
--Other Talk
----Poker, Gambling, and Vegas
----Politics and World Events
--Sports Talk
Mature Audiences
--Adult Talk

Feedback
--Forum feedback and support

matta 07-05-08 10:53 PM

Holy crap, there's a top drop down? I've only been here like 8 years and I've never seen that.

Wow, that's depressing. 8 years. I'm going to go cry now.

matta 07-05-08 10:57 PM

But yeah, a separator would work well too. It's just that I go to click on "SportsTalk" and accidentally overshoot by one to "AdultTalk" and there are sometimes porn ads that pop up. Even when porn ads don't pop up, I get a nice email warning because I was on a page that included the phrase "Gay Porn" (somehow, "Pee in her butt" gets through the filters, though).

All the website links to Xcritic are contractual as stated by G! in numerous public comments. I don't think DVD Talk is currently making enough money to afford paying him enough to amend the contract to eliminate the links but I can certainly appreciate that there are some here who want every vestige of the adult content, much of which was produced specifically for DVD Talk, to go away like it never existed. Only a handful of people know the exact amount of traffic between the websites (Xcritic also has links to DVD Talk) but it is clear that there is a good deal of it for each side to benefit from. As far as a duration clause for the links, I have been told that they are up forever but I admit that I have not read the contract.

Hey, XCritic can do whatever it wants - I don't have a problem with it. The problem that I do have is that it's too easy to accidentally get adult content when you don't want it (i.e. it's very easy to try and click SportsTalk and accidentally miss and hit AdultTalk).

By the general nature of AdultTalk, it creates issues for many people who accidentally click on that link when they're in certain situations (at work, kids in the room, etc.) Sometimes I can hit the back button really quick, but occassionally it will actually hang on the page before it can go back. And even if you are able to go back quickly, if your internet traffic is monitored, you've just been flagged.

So, really nothing against XCritic.

Trevor 07-06-08 10:03 AM

Geoff, you don't want accidental click-thrus, right? While the links have to be there contractually, you wouldn't object to DVDtalk making it slightly less likely for accidental visits I would hope.

Adult talk is right in between two forums, and gets lots of accidental clicks. I've done it myself dozens of times, as sports and feedback are two forums I read regularly.

Can DVDtalk add a verification page or whatever they're called, asking for a second click to actually get to the adult site?

Or, an even easier fix. Just put adult talk all the way at the bottom, after feedback, with a line separator or two.

X 07-06-08 10:44 AM

Geoff did add the dividers around Adult Talk to the forum selector at the top of the page some years ago when requested by people who had the accidental clicking problem. But the dropdown at the bottom of the page is automatically generated by the forum and only allows the listing of actual forums in an order that it determines. So my understanding is that dividers can't be added there and Adult can't be put at the bottom.

The solution if you want to go to Sports? Use the top forum selector.

So the index can't be edited? It has been in the past when new forums are added.

Just add a new sub-category under feedback for adult. Or, if that is not contractually possible, just move the feedback category up. That would leave adult at the very bottom and limit accidental visits.

Hahahahahahahahaha....as usual, you are freakin' hilarious. Comedy gold.

What if one posted in XCritiv back when it was a normal subforum in dvdtalk, before it went completely XXX or whathaveyou, now your username is forever tied with a XXX forum, even though it was just simply a post in a regular subforum of dvdtalk back then?

That is a lot "unfair" than one dropdown [especially when you can avoid it by using the other dropdown] that accidentally leads to visits. That's just my opinion.

I wouldn't worry about it. Your username is tied up with posts that would be oh-so-much more concerning than your posting in some XXX forum.

I brought that up as did others last year. There was going to be a tentative "fix" for it but it was placed on the back burners IIRC. To me, it wasn't about fairness so much as consideration but then some hothead (who was subsequently banned from DVD Talk) started going on a rampage so the whole idea was probably nixed. You can contact the editor at XC and he'd be able to help you more than anyone if it's a real issue (Google is becoming more XC friendly than DT friendly from what I've been told) but it might be on a case by case basis if at all.

Matta: No offense taken. I leave the technical stuff to "X" to explain but it is likely that the placement issues are related to the contract stuff too. Those wanting the proverbial "clean sweep" are not likely to get their wishes fulfilled any time soon but I agree there should be room for mutual discussion amongst the owners of both websites (my diplomacy doesn't stem from writing for both but I recognize that it is up to them, not us, to work something out).

Auto: Say what you will but if you're relying solely on "forum traffic", you must not know how much more traffic is the result of the content (ie: reviews, articles, etc) on BOTH websites (a lot more than comes from the forums at either).

Even worse: what about people who posted in an Other thread that was subsequently moved to Adult Talk that was subsequently moved to XC.

Cardsfan111 07-07-08 09:20 PM

It appears as if there's been some changes made.

auto 07-07-08 09:26 PM

Nice.

However, when you click on the Adult Forum link all you get is:

No Forum specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the webmaster

As info. I would prefer the link go away completely but if Geoff has it in his contract it should at least work correctly.

X 07-07-08 09:42 PM

Removing Adult from the site's forum list automatically makes it disappear from the bottom dropdown. The top dropdown was manually generated so it has to be removed manually. The error shows there's no forum for it to link to.

That's a good point. I don't want my username associated with an XXX site.

porieux 07-08-08 03:07 AM

I'm afraid that reference is a little too cryptic for me to understand.

Beat me to it.

If I were him, I'd be more concerned about the posts where he and his "team" attempted to abduct an innocent shopper from a COMPUSA.

Mrs. Danger 07-08-08 03:08 PM

Well, I hope you are all happy. It's gone. http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/sad049.gif

Ranger 07-08-08 04:51 PM

Wow. Something was actually done. Link is still there in the top drop-down menu with the dividers. I suppose everyone is satisfied now.

Edit: Ah, that link doesn't go anywhere.
