Can we "score" posts?

I've seen other sites where they will have a plus and minus button on their posts where users can judge the content of the post by giving it a plus or minus.

USA Today has a thing where you can recommend posts.

I think it would be nice for this site to have.

I find myself using the +/- or recommended a lot on other sites.

Well played.

I think it's a crappy idea on other sites and is essentially only a popularity vote.

I think some people would be very surprised what their rating would turn out to me. Mine for example, would be -45837.

This type of system primarily useful when there are too many posts to be effectively moderated by a set group of people or when there are just so many posts that people only have time to scroll through and read the highest rated ones. I'm not sure that either situation applies to this forum.

I think this is a pretty good explanation. I personally don't see the need for it here, but I'm just speaking for myself in this case. Not sure how the other mods/admins feel about it.

Groucho 03-17-08 10:37 AM

This works well in places like Digg that essentially unmoderated and where the software hides posts that are rated negatively.

But I've seen this implemented on forums that are moderated and it has no effect whatsoever. Most people don't bother to rate posts or threads.

That's contrary to my experience at Fatwallet.

That's a great example of how to ABUSE such a system. There is an old boys club over there that artificially bumps and negs certain users as to perceived reputation, rather than content.

I don't want to return to high school.

You wouldn't happen to be one of those "certain users" would you?

fumanstan 03-17-08 02:39 PM

I don't see a need for it here.

Numanoid 03-17-08 02:51 PM

Unless it comes with free candy, this is a silly, silly idea.

No, I'm not. But thanks for the implication, that was awful nice of you.

I think free candy is a great idea!

I wonder who would have the highest score? My guess: wm lopez

The Bus 03-17-08 03:38 PM

No thanks, NC Mojo has tried to score with me too many times. :(

Negative one to all of you!

Just kidding. But I did think that it could eliminate some of the posts of just "thumbs up" or "lol". I know we're not running rampant or anything with those kinds of posts.

Plus, I don't get to post as much as I used to. I lurk more than post, and just hitting a +1 or whatever would make up for the lack of real posting somewhat. I guess. Maybe not.

So was there another shooter, or just you?

And sooner or later, you'll give in to my charms. Sooner or later, you will be mine.

You will be mine. :hump:

I find it funny that some people give my mini movie reviews a letter grade and the appropriate amount of stars (since that's how I grade the movies themselves). Heh.

I give this post 4.25 stars, or a grade of A-.

Even if it's this stuff?!?

DonnachaOne 03-19-08 05:33 PM

Well, I don't like scores, but I like the idea of a "thanks" button. I've seen that on a couple forums - it reads underneath the original posts as "the following posters thank _____: "

Should come in handy, especially with all those bargain threads and their impersonal "thanks OP!" posts.
