Posting Etiquette: Bookmarking Posts
 

Am I the only one bothered by certain users continuously posting smilies (the same smilie) so they can find their posts easier? Everyone else can manage to look for their posts without problems, I don't see the need to insert the smilie in every single message, it's never relevant to the conversation.

I have asked a particular user, repeatedly, to setup his signature with the smilie so it's less intrusive but he continues to post the same way. I posted a hyperlink so all he had to do was click a few times to set it up, nope, still posting the smilie. If it's in the signature area there's at least the option of disabling signatures, which I have done.

Sure, I could ignore the user but I think it sets a precedent where everyone can just post a picture or a smilie so they can find their posts easier. The forums would be messed up if we all decided to do such a thing.

I eventually put someone on my Ignore list because of this. I got sick and tired of seeing the same smiley showing up in so many threads.

Seriously, why does it matter to you so much? Yeah, it's lame of him, and he's definitely ignoring your request...but why do you care in the first place? Just moved on...it's completely unimportant.

Well, sure it's unimportant, I just find it disruptive and irritating. I don't think anyone's time is more important then anyone else's that they can't find their own posts by just looking.

Hell, let's all post smilies and pictures in every post so we can see what we wrote.

I find signatures annoying in general, but there's the option to turn then off.

I actually don't see how a smilie would help you find your own post quicker -- for whatever reason. I suppose it's to read only the replies after your own. I don't particularly have a problem finding my posts and have never heard of this "bookmarking" method. :shrug:

I find it somewhat annoying, but not annoying enough to really warrant doing anything about it. I think in the OP's case, if it is that bothersome, adding the offending user to your ignore list might really be the best course of action here. I don't think what the poster has to say can be more beneficial to you than the negative feelings you get when seeing the particular smiley again and again.

I don't even find it annoying. I didn't even notice it until it was mentioned.

I put him on ignore.

I guess it just annoyed the crap out of me because I have signatures turned off and it just stuck out like a sore thumb.

I suggest we all use the -popcorn- smilie, then his bookmark would be lost in a sea of bookmarks *laughs maniacally*

Seriously, it's never bothered me but if someone wants to unobtrusively bookmark their post why not just click on their username? Everyone else's will still be blue but yours will be black. Makes it really easy to scroll down the page and find all your posts.

Wow. I've never noticed anyone doing that. If you don't mind pointing out who is doing it, I'm curious to see what you are talking about.

I don't even understand how putting a smilie in a post could help you search for your own posts. Why would you want to find your own posts? On the rare occasions that I have a post that I edit frequently (i.e. my holiday movie challenge list), I just use this feature called "search" in Firefox (or your favorite browser)... it works like a charm. I think that would be much faster than scrolling through looking for a smilie.
