A suggestion re: anime / Japanese cartoon reviews

Would it be possible to put these reviews in a separate section like the adult DVD reviews? I've never seen an anime DVD in the "Most viewed" review section, which, to me, indicates that they're less popular than the "normal" DVD reviews--yet they continue to clutter up the review page and make it hard to just scroll through looking for regular film/TV reviews.

I'm not trying to insult anyone who appreciates the anime reviews, so please do not take this suggestion that way. Thanks.

Not sure why this was moved into "Forum Feedback," as my original post has nothing to do with the forum. I was referring to the actual reviews in the REVIEW section of DVD Talk--not the forum...

I like the idea...if they were collected together in one area I would probably notice them more.

...because the people whose eyes you want to reach probably won't see it in the Reviews forum. "Forum Feedback", despite the name and current description, is used as a catch-all for feedback related to the site as a whole.

Thanks, Adam. I didn't realize the topic had been brought up before.

I've just noticed that lately there have been a ton of anime reviews showing up. Currently, there are reviews of 3 seasons (?) of "Zipang," 2 of "When They Cry," etc., etc. Eight of the first 30 reviews are anime, yet, again, no anime titles ever seem to end up in the "Popular Reviews" section. It's frustrating to have non-anime DVD reviews (in which I'm much more interested) pushed off the front page because of the flood of anime reviews.

Yes, I realize that anime can encompass a variety of stories, characters, genres, etc., but it's just not a style of storytelling I'll ever embrace. Given the fact that I'm apparently not alone in my sentiments (since anime reviews do not appear to be particularly popular), it seems like giving anime its own section would make sense.

Jason, exactly how "hard" is it to scroll through the "clutter" for you?

There have been in the past but especially with the sheer number of mainstream reviews coming into the database, the most likely titles to make the top ten section are those aggressively discounted at stores or the release of the week type flicks. Using your thinking, should DVD Talk also incorporate separate sections for independent movies that don't get extensive front page promotion and various niche genres? Maybe titles that are not Region coded 1 should be moved to the bottom or foreign films since a lot of people don't have multi-region players or hate foreign films? (popularity contests tend to remind me that the porn reviews get more hits on average than mainstream so should we elevate their status above the mainstream section; I'm not advocating this, just following through on your logic)

The reason there were so many anime reviews lately is largely tied to a specific company sending a bunch of back catalog titles. Like most movie genres, there are advocates and there are detractors for anime but the basis for your request (which came to this forum because it was a request for an operational alteration of the website) amounts to you being too lazy to scroll down to find titles you like while skipping those you don't. I don't mean that in a mean way, just a casual observation boiling down your own words. Currently, anime makes up about 7% of the mainstream review database and if you have to occasionally scroll a tiny bit more to see titles you like, that means our ever-growing selection of reviews is increasingly more comprehensive; a good thing if you ask me.

Like I said a couple of years ago when this was discussed: "Adult is separated out for all the obvious reasons but I'd hate to see mainstream splintered into a never ending series of categories based on a small number of people's desire to avoid a relatively tiny amount of reviews." I think having a separate sub-section like TV on DVD gets might be warranted but even then, the more we clutter up the links, the more the website takes on the generic look of other places online.

In any case, thanks for the input but I'm going back to "push off" some other mainstream titles.

As others have said, where do you draw the line? Do you separate TV, music, other small genres?
I'm fine either way.

There is so much anime right now on the new review page because we've gotten a flood of back titles in and are working hard to cover them all. I'm not inclined to add yet another sub section to the review page as it's already broken down into so many sections.

Thanks for the feedback.
