Links to other sites

Hey there,

I was wondering if I am allowed to post a link to another site in my sig? I know a lot of people have links to their person pages or dvdsites in their sigs. What is ok to use and what isn't?

I'd like to put this in my sig: www.stand.org

Sorry if this is a repost, I could not find any information on this topic.

Many thanks,

-Kitty

You're also not a "respond to email" type of person either! :grunt:

Hello? *sniff* *sniff* Mods?

Dead 01-19-06 09:29 AM

The forum legal statement includes the following...

ABSOLUTELY NO:
...
• Posting of any form of advertising including: URL's with affiliate codes, referrer tags, tracking numbers or anything which actively promotes a site or company
...
• Spam or promotion of your personal site for advertising purposes
Ultimately Geoff would have to decide where the line is between mentioning a site in your sig and something that "actively promotes a site or company".

The second bullet point would only seem to apply if you have a relationship with the site. I don't know if you do or not though, so I included it just in case.

Thank you, Dead! Yes, I'm a member of that site. It's not a big deal but since it's for the children, I thought I'd at least ask. ;)

I'll wait until I get the final word from you guys and if it's no, I'm ok with that. :)

Kittydreamer 01-24-06 06:19 PM

So, what's the final word here?

X 01-24-06 07:04 PM

As long as you're not soliciting donations or actively directing people to the link like this

GO HERE--->www.stand.org

I think it's ok.

Kittydreamer 01-24-06 07:18 PM

So I can put it in my sig? Thanks, X. :)

X 01-24-06 08:09 PM

That looks like the right way to do it.

Thank you so much. :D I will do my best not to abuse this.

Hey guys, there seems to be a lot of fighting and confussion going on about links to other sites in sigs. Maybe it's time for a refresher or something?

Thank you

Mordred 02-22-06 11:37 AM

I'd appreciate this as well. Apparently a mod removed my sig in the last 12 hours or so, without bothering to say anything to me about it.

It recently looked like:
I don't link to any movie or video game reviews I write because I'm not trying to compete with DVDTalk. I just figured a few people might be interested in some of my music reviews.

Our site is definitely not for profit considering we haven't made a dime in 4 years, so I'm not sure what the harm was. I've had that sig for at least two years and I've never had a complaint. I usually don't post it outside the music section unless I forget to check the button because I figure most people don't care.

Your signature was considered not only excessively advertising a particular site with 5 links to it as well as an advertising blurb about the site itself, but in addition it has buying links for Amazon and eBay. It doesn't really matter whether your site has made a profit or how long your signature went unnoticed.

You can take this up with Geoff if you think our decision was wrong. Emailing him directly is probably the best method.

Mordred 02-22-06 12:58 PM

I did, and I'll certainly abide by whatever he says.

I will say that a simple warning or "change your sig" e-mail would have been nice. After being here for over 6 years I'd have figured I might be treated differently than the common sig-spam newbie.

If we hadn't thought your signature was new you probably would have received an email - eventually.
