Anyone else having this problem? I wasn't having it when you first posted about the problem, but it seems to have started causing issues today. The status bar seems stuck on "read anon.truenorth.speedera.net" and resource usage is at 90+%. :( |
I've noticed this the past few days. I use Firefox and tabbed browsing. When DVDtalk's front page is on one of the tabs with the Hostage banner ad, scrolling is choppy and response time is way down no matter what tab I'm using. Took me a while to figure it out because I'd usually notice it when I was using a different tab.
Ya, it makes it impossible for me to click on "Forum" on the main page, I have to use the drop-down bar on the side when that ad comes up with Firefox.
I can't select any of the options scattered along the top with the Hostage banner going. FYI.
Same thing here on firefox. and the Adblock addon will not allow me to block that banner so i can use teh links on the top of the page. Oh Well... IE for now.
Yeah, that ad slammed my browser (Netscape 7.2) three times in a row this morning. It was eating up so much of my resources I couldn't even CTRL-ALT-DEL to shut the program down. I had to wait for Netscape to crash on its own.
The only time I really notice a problem (on Fireefox) is when I'm also playing a DVD (via PowerDVD), the playback gets very choppy. I figure it'll only last another week or so so it's no big deal. If flash banners start to become the norm though that's another issue.
Yep, can't click the forum button. Doesn't slow my comp at all, but it's a really dumb ad that impedes one's ability to use this site.
Ditto here. I got to the forum from the newsletter, but not from the frontpage.
And ironically enough, the damn thing appears three f***ing times on THIS thread.
What's really odd is I don't seen to have a problem with it until it visibly appears on the screen. |
I am using Netscape, and I am having the same problems.
One thing I've noticed, and hopefully Geoff reads through these to pick up on this, is when both the top and middle banner come up w/ the Hostage one it completely hoses the browser. I wonder if there is a way to much sure both banners don't come up w/ the same ad?
[cough] premium membership [/cough]
:D |
Using firefox and its ok when there is one banner but if there is 2 (like nemein pointed out) it shoots CPU usage straight to 99% and locks the browser. I have to do an end task in the task manager to get my computer back.
Same problems as everyone else.
Sorry guys. I know this SUCKS. I gave the feedback to the ad agency of all the issues and we've actually passed on a few upcoming campaigns which have this kind of advertising.
YES this means we're skipping out on making $$$ to improve your experience on the site!!!! So you're welcome :p You should see the banner a lot less on the site starting Sunday. |
Thanks Geoff!
Realize this means less money, but we are greatful. |
I just had the Hostage banner ad. cpu usage went from the normal 5% to 35% and memory usage went up 10 megs. reloaded the page and the ad went away and everything dropped back to normal
I detest that ad. First time I got it on the main page of DVDTalk, I tried clicking onto a textfield to search for reviews, but I could not get the text cursor to appear in the textbox. A few seconds later, the Hostage ad appeared in front of my cursor, and I realized I had been clicking on an invisible ad. Even so, I could not get into the search textbox because that ad kept following my cursor. Nice.
When that banner was around there were a number of links I could not click. In the end I discovered that I could click on the furthest left link which brought me to a page that didn't have the ad. And then I went from there to wherever I wanted to go (reviews or forum). Very annoying though.
