What’s with the Super Popups?
I call them Super Popups because they seem designed to defeat the Windows pupup blocker.
Is this intentional? If so, it seems pretty dishonest to me. |
No kidding. But Firefox seems to do the trick.

DVD Talk Membership is not free, the membership fee (which is thirty dollars per year) is paid on your behalf by the advertisers on this site. As such you agree not to use any ad blocking or suppression software or be liable for your membership fee. |
You know, regarding that rule, given that there's still no paid membership available, is it possible to pay the fee and get all ads removed?
If not they should take out that line and re-write it to say that using ad blockers is grounds for suspenion or banning. |
Yes, that's wonderful.
However, I have this handy-dandy toolbar provided by DVDTalk that includes a popup blocker. -ptth- And as far as I know, the popup blocker is turned on as the default in IE. Since this is a standard feature in both programs, it seems that, yes, the "legal" statement is due for rewording, along with a sticky at the top of each forum advising the very few who use either or both of those programs to immediately remove/disable such SW or face the Wrath of God. Of course, DVDTalk doesn't use popups, and promises not to do so, but when it does a thread will be posted about it, according to the FAQs. So, perhaps rather than jumping on my ass, you can consider this that promised thread? Flame away, gentlemen. |
So if I'm using a pop-up blocker, I'm breaking dvdtalk's rules and stealing from them?
|
afaik, we use popunders, not popups, but some of the ad network(s) may sneak in popups ..
as far as "blocking" popwhatever's ..it's obviously something that cannot be enforced so do with what you will..paid memberships are still in the works for those who are interested, but there's no timeline or anything and any sort of information as to what would be included is still being worked on.. |
I've definitely noticed tribal fusion has had a few advertisements that were pop ups not pop unders. Specifically the ing direct ads. I've had them pop up at least 10 times over the past few weeks.
|
Yes, it’s the tribal fusion ones I’m talking about, and they are certainly not popunders.
They have a certain “we’ll only use them once a day” signature that is unmistakable. |
By "super popups", are you talking about the ones that try to break through about five or six times, then finally get through? I've gotten a few of these lately. My popup blocker makes a noise when it blocks something, and these new ones try so many times it sounds like an automatic weapon. It's almost like it's not enough for them to politely knock; they're now using battering rams to break down the castle door.

I'm ready to contribute when paid memberships become available but I'd really hate to have to shut down my blocker every time I come to this site. |

I've noticed the Blockbuster ones as well.
|
I get those fucking Blockbuster ones all the time. I'm already subscribed!

Unless they use jscript, nothing will show up in Firefox, especially if you use Flash Block.
BTW, $30 subscription per year with "exclusive" discounts (say $1 off a new release at Ken Crane's or something) + avatar seems highly reasonable. |

These seem to be getting worse and worse for me.
|
This is really getting annoying.
|
Yes, it is. Almost every other page for me now, tribalfusion all the time. Where's the subscription option?
|
Never go backwards. Just use the index functions, or page numbers.
|
Well, I guess I shouldn't have pointed that out because they fixed that.:(

Safari's popup blocker kill everything so far.
Feel bad now since I had forgot a popup blocker ban. Seems like paid membership version has forever been coming soon. |
