Minimum 3 character reply?

When did this feature get added (did a search, couldn't find it)? I am fairly sure I understand why it has been implemented, and of course nobody asked for my opinion, but since this is the feedback forum here's my opinion.

It is one of the stupidest things I have ever seen. How does it serve a purpose? If I want to post a smilie as a response, what's to stop me from posting 2 to get around this? Or post a word of text?

Not only that, it doesn't even work! I was responding to a statement where the poster missed something posted earlier in the thread. SO, rather than just telling him, I quoted that earlier post. SO, my "post" was actually contained in a quote, so the filter didn't think I had enough characters. Stupid.

I guess so you don't put unneeded work on the server (you will return many more hits if you allow 3 letters than 4 or more), but it does make it tough to search for 'dvd'.

Fortunately, there's not a "maximum hyperbole limit".

That's a separate issue.

I would accompany it was an announcement that replies consisting of just an emoticon are no longer tolerated. So if somebody uses two they're trying to buck the system and should face suspension.

Nothing wrong with the idea. I feel this is an outlandish excuse for a thread.

It is a damn fine thread. The need for 3 characters to be typed is an outrage. I stand behind LurkerDan on this issue.

twikoff 05-18-05 03:51 PM

the only time that I have run into the 3 character reply limitation.. is when Im reading a thread and agree with someones reply exactly.. so I simply quote it

now, i just gotta say.. yea, what he said
