Can we do somtehing about linking to "Surprise Scary Pop-Up Ghost" videos?

I ask this on behalf of those of us who browse from work, as well as those of us who don't like being fooled into wasting time watching something that we were told was something else.

Can we get some kind of administrative action taken against people who think it's funny to link to those ridiculous videos where something innocuous is happening only to have a ghost pop up and scream at some incredibly overmodulated volume?

Or at least a policy added to the rules that prohibit misrepresentation of linked content?

How many times have we seen threads bogged down with "This isn't one of those scary pop-up videos is it?" whenever someone posts a legitmate link? It's really annoying.

Thank you for your attention.

I think administrative action should be taken against those people who still fall for stupid stuff like that, especially when it is over a year old.

Its more than over a year old, these jokes have been out for years. I don't like them either, they're pretty sad, but I don't think we can do anything about it.

Yeah, because it's so easily identifiable by a URL.

Oh yeah, I'm also sorry for not having experienced every single thing on the Internet yet.

We certainly can ("we" being the mods, not us). We have rules against posting all kinds of things, why would this have to be any different?

I'm not blaming you for falling for it or not knowing about it, but at least be a little suspicious. Whenever I come across something I'm not sure about, I at least turn my speakers down so that, if it is a scare like that one, I don't end up looking foolish at work.

And, unless you were threatened to be fired over this, I think you are taking it a bit too seriously.

I would say that anybody who finds those funny is the one who needs to grow a sense of humor.

I think they're dumb, but i would say just don't click on every link people post here at work. There's plenty of other things to read

If you find them funny or not, I just can't believe it's enough of an issue to discuss banning them.

Oh, me too. And when I click on something that isn't moving, like if it's a pic of a kitchen (that's sort of a notorious one, "what's wrong with this picture"), then I click the back button as fast as I can.

See, this is the kind of nonsense we're forced to do. Why should we have to be so defensive? Why are people allowed to misrepresent a link? Am I allowed to link to a hardcore porn pic and label it as "Check out this beautiful picture of the Grand Canyon"?

Well your example isnt too good cause "grand canyon" could be the title of the picture of a chick with a huge vagina.

The whole essence of those "jump out and scream" links is to tell people it's one thing and to have it surprise/scare them. If he had told you that it was an animated gif that has a 1 frame closeup of a scary face and a loud noise associated with it, that would be ruining the whole point. And the thread you are referring to was a thread about ghosts, so wouldn't it be prudent to assume that a link someone is posting is going to feature a ghost of some sort? It's just common sense to assume that a link like that is going to have some kind of scare in it.

Maybe that is the problem? Maybe you should be working instead of looking at DVDTalk.

Anything with audio should have a warning. That's just common courtesy.

And this isn't just a problem for people at work, it can be a problem for people surfing from home late at night. Nothing sucks more than waking your spouse out of a deep sleep with a noise from the computer, or scaring an infant into another bout of crying.
