Why haven't you upgraded?

To vBulletin 3.0.3 yet?

Just wondering...

mikehunt 10-27-04 08:29 PM

does that version add enough to risk potential headaches?

Maxwell Smart 10-28-04 12:58 PM

why haven't u helped chip in for it?

DonnachaOne 10-28-04 01:04 PM

What's new with that?

Also, why fix what isn't broken?

Lol. I buy all my products through the links here. I paid for it on my own site which makes far far less than this site.

I'm sure the $30 per year in licencing Geoff pays for vBulletin is a drop in the bucket compared to the server bills he has. In addition vBulletin has a nice subscription service that he could implement to more than help pay for the upgrade. Now if it's a performance issue (the most likely reason), just wanted to know...

twikoff 10-28-04 05:13 PM

geoff mentioned this in the threads about the subscription service

i dont remember all the details.. but probably wouldnt be too difficult to track down his explainations

i believe there were actually some changes in the newest versions of vbulletin that made him consider other forum options instead..

in theory.. going to version 3.x was going to help us move towards an optional subscription feature.. and should benefit the site overall. So i would assume whatever the down sides are, they must be pretty big to keep him from making the upgrade.....

(or maybe he already has it running on a dev server and hasnt told any of us.. so we havent been able to go play around)

Not to mention all that money he's been saving by not eating Big Mac's. :)

people around here dislike change - that might be another reason. When the forum was upgraded a few years ago, people flipped out at first.

sracer 11-09-04 11:05 AM

Now that FireFox 1.0 browser has been released, I think that upgrading vBulletin is warranted.

Way back when, there was a bug in Netscape that caused the text entry boxes to be the wrong size. vBulletin at the time compensated for it by interrogating the browser agent and if it was Netscape, it automatically adjusted for it.

Newer versions of Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox have since fixed the bug, but older versions of vBulletin still compensate for that bug... the result is that text entry fields for people using Netscape/Moz/Firefox is extremely narrow.

Newer versions of vBulletin no longer have that "fix" in it.

It's a pretty huge task, and so one we haven't rushed in to.

Something we're seriously considering, the issue is more when than if.

belboz 11-09-04 07:06 PM

FWIW, I set up a vbulletin forum several months ago and there's a 30 second fix for the Mozilla/Firefox textarea problem with the current version.

Go to Styles>Modify>Fonts/Colors/Etc.

Scroll to the bottom, there's a section labelled "Textarea Widths."

There's entries for IE4, Netscape 4, Netscape 6. I used values 70, 50, and 80, respectively; and that worked pretty well for me.

I think you'd screw the Netscape Navigator 4.7 users in favor of the Mozilla/Firefox folks, but that's a tradeoff that's acceptable now (IMO), and will only become more so.

sracer 11-09-04 09:22 PM

That's a great tip, belboz! If that was implemented, it eliminates my reason for upgrading.

I need to get a life.

OK... Updated the values per your suggestion

Sweet. I just noticed the change. Thanks for taking the time to make the site a little friendlier to non-IE users.

Geoff, between that post and your review of the Vegetarian cooking DVDs i dunno. you're giving people like Groucho a little too much ammo.

Don't worry, your fellow veggies have your back, brother!

I doubt it.. I believe it was discussed before and was decided against due to bandwidth..I believe the current version has the ability for avatars..so I don't think the forum upgrade change will bring about that change..but I'm not sure what Geoff has in mind with the upgrade..I guess we'll have to see what neat new features the upgrade has, and what he will allow.
