Why haven't you upgraded?
To vBulletin 3.0.3 yet?
Just wondering... |
does that version add enough to risk potential headaches?
|
why haven't u helped chip in for it?
|
What's new with that?
Also, why fix what isn't broken? |

geoff mentioned this in the threads about the subscription service
i dont remember all the details.. but probably wouldnt be too difficult to track down his explainations i believe there were actually some changes in the newest versions of vbulletin that made him consider other forum options instead.. in theory.. going to version 3.x was going to help us move towards an optional subscription feature.. and should benefit the site overall. So i would assume whatever the down sides are, they must be pretty big to keep him from making the upgrade..... (or maybe he already has it running on a dev server and hasnt told any of us.. so we havent been able to go play around) |

people around here dislike change - that might be another reason. When the forum was upgraded a few years ago, people flipped out at first.

Now that FireFox 1.0 browser has been released, I think that upgrading vBulletin is warranted.
Way back when, there was a bug in Netscape that caused the text entry boxes to be the wrong size. vBulletin at the time compensated for it by interrogating the browser agent and if it was Netscape, it automatically adjusted for it. Newer versions of Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox have since fixed the bug, but older versions of vBulletin still compensate for that bug... the result is that text entry fields for people using Netscape/Moz/Firefox is extremely narrow. Newer versions of vBulletin no longer have that "fix" in it. |
It's a pretty huge task, and so one we haven't rushed in to.
Something we're seriously considering, the issue is more when than if. |
FWIW, I set up a vbulletin forum several months ago and there's a 30 second fix for the Mozilla/Firefox textarea problem with the current version.
Go to Styles>Modify>Fonts/Colors/Etc. Scroll to the bottom, there's a section labelled "Textarea Widths." There's entries for IE4, Netscape 4, Netscape 6. I used values 70, 50, and 80, respectively; and that worked pretty well for me. I think you'd screw the Netscape Navigator 4.7 users in favor of the Mozilla/Firefox folks, but that's a tradeoff that's acceptable now (IMO), and will only become more so. |
That's a great tip, belboz! If that was implemented, it eliminates my reason for upgrading.

I need to get a life.

Sweet. I just noticed the change. Thanks for taking the time to make the site a little friendlier to non-IE users.
