Did you know that "fuck" has a long and glorious history as part of our English language? Back in medieval times, when people in England spoke Old English (which is even older than the Middle English of Chaucer, for instance), good old Anglo-Saxon words like fuck and shit were part of the language. In 1066, though, William the Conqueror showed up and earned his nickname... and since he and his pals were French, pretty soon all the nobles and moderately educated people in newly conquered England switched over to French, leaving English to the illiterate peasants.

Sadly, that meant the loss of a huge amount of educated Old English vocabularly, which later had to have replacements imported in from Latin (for instance, the word "astronomy" is Latin, but there actually was an Old English word for astronomy - just the illiterate peasants forgot it in the centuries of Norman rule). Anyway, the parts of the language that DID survive were (no big surprise!) the earthy kinds of words that peasants used every day. Cow. Pig. Man. Shit. Fuck. Etc.

As to fuck's elevation from ordinary slightly vulgar word to the King of All Swear Words, that's probably also due to the Normans. After all, if you want to be *really* offensive, you'd use the language of the despised underclasses!

So, when I break something or stub my toe and yell "Oh, fuck!" I would be perfectly understandable to my great-great-etc.-grandfather who would have said exactly the same thing when his sword broke as he was fighting off the Saxon or Norman invaders. Cool, huh?
