"Fixed Posts" Should Be Banned
I am getting really tired of people "fixing" my posts and making it look I am writing something else. Take for example:
http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...93#post4894693 This practice should be banned. EDIT: The post I pointed too has now been edited to take out "originally posted by chanster" |
Re: "Fixed Posts" Should Be Banned
Originally posted by chanster This practice should be encouraged. I don't know about banned, but I do think for the large part they're incredibly stupid. I think if someone wants to object to what someone else says they should at least have the decency to say it in their own words. |

Re: Re: Re: "Fixed Posts" Should Be Banned
Originally posted by Charlie Goose I think it's done more for a comedic purpose, than a serious objection of what the original poster wrote. |
I think it helps because in some cases a point that was originally trying to be made is overlooked, then when it is seen in the "fixed" post the original will be re-read.

Originally posted by X I know what you mean, but that's not the way it's usually used in the political threads. |

I agree, we should use corrected instead of fixed
I agree with Charlie Goose it's done for comedic reasons, which is one of the reasons I love this forum, please don't ban fixed, if people need to know what a person really said they should read the orginal post not the fixed one |
It's meant as comedy. Those damn political threads sucking the life out of that forum -ohbfrank-

Unfortunately, there's nothing in the forum rules that prohibit members from being smart asses. On the bright side, if there were such rules, there would be no Other forum.

I think to enjoy the other forum, you have to have a sense of humor. Debates, especially political ones, get out of hand sometimes, and a "fixed" with a smiley lighten things up. I've never done it myself because I don't like to mock what others said, but I can see a few who goes around just having fun. I have no problem with that.

Originally posted by Luc TC I think to enjoy the other forum, you have to have a sense of smell. Debates, especially political ones, require lubrication sometimes, and a reach around lightens things up. I've never done "IT" myself because I don't like normal sex, but I can see a few who like the flamingo and dolphins. I have no problem with that. |

Perfect!
To the issue at hand, one shouldn't worry that they're being misrepresented because it's obvious to the reader that the quoting poster has edited the quote from it's original composition by the simple fact that the quoter puts 'Fixed' in the post. This is a clear indicator that the quoted post has been jacked with for political/comedic/fill-in-the-blank intent. |

Here: Originally posted by LurkerDan I think it's fairly well established that you can't trust the quoted language. And I see very few attempts, if any, where someone really tries to pass off the quoted language as what was originally said. The whole concept of "fixed" means "You didn't really say this". |
Originally posted by LurkerDan Mutley Hyde, you are a god among otters, you kick so much ass it's just not funny. I bow before you. Oh, and fixed. -ptth- |
Re: "Fixed Posts" Should Be Banned
Originally posted by chanster I am getting really tired of 'jewish' people Hm.... :) Just kidding. Usually when posts are changed, it's done for comedic effect. It should be bannable when it is done only with the intent of passing it off as the original posters language. |
Originally posted by Mutley Hyde Why, thank you! Oh, and fixed. -ptth- |

Like if a conservative/liberal member has his post in a political thread quoted and changed to a view point he finds offensive. That could be construed as flame bait and simply likely to start a fight. I don't think the whole practice needs to be banned, but rather it just needs to be judged on a case by case basis as there are more issues that passing it off as the original poster's language. |
Originally posted by Ranger fortunately, there's a lot of smart asses in the other forum. On the down side, I'm one of them. |
Re: Re: Re: "Fixed Posts" Should Be Banned
Originally posted by Josh Hinkle I could see this still being a problem when the original poster doesn't find it funny. The solution, of course, is to not take oneself so seriously. |

Originally posted by Breakfast with Girls I agree. But I don't think it's the problem of the person who "fixes" the original post. The solution, of course, is to not take oneself so seriously. Just because someone is offended doesn't make something offensive. |

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: "Fixed Posts" Should Be Banned
Originally posted by Bushdog I agree. Just because someone is offended doesn't make something offensive. Perhaps the solution is that if a member is offended by someone who "fixes" there post, they should just e-mail a mod/report the post, and ask the mod to tell the other member to please not "fix" his posts in the future. I don't imagine enough people are bothered by "fixed" posts to make any set rule on it, and that would allow sensitive members a way to have it addressed to some degree at least. |
