well son of a... thanks

I actually dislike the idea of message count as many people put too much into it and even those of us that don't can or have been accused of putting to much into it.

Still, I understand for title change reasons why we have it.

Nothing was worse than the days when the user post count was actually shown on every post they did. It basically became a competition to see how many you could get.

I agree, NitroJMS, and the Mods were constantly telling everyone in every 1 out of 5 threads to stop padding or face suspension.

Would it really affect us that much if post count was only viewed by the Mods and not by everyone else?

Jackskeleton 05-09-04 06:02 PM

Woah woah woah woah. Slow down there big fella's. :p Post counts are already not viewable unless you go to profile. No need to wipe them out completely. I don't see how that would change anything for better or worse. Might as well take away Registration dates also because of the whole Old school vs. New school fighting that comes from it. -ohbfrank-

twikoff 05-09-04 06:07 PM

maybe we can get rid of titles and unique usernames as well

TomOpus 05-09-04 11:11 PM

Mods can use them to threaten some people with suspension b/cuz it may appear that those people are padding their numbers. Less people would be suspended if post counts weren't available.

Easier for the mods to reduce the user's post count by 500-1000.

I think the mods cracking down on it was part of why it was so cool to people, you know, like teenagers rebelling
there's other forums that I post at that show it under your name and it's not a big deal. There's the occasional "Post 6000" thread, but even those usually have something of substance in them and the people that post in those threads don't simply make "pad" posts

I never knew you could do that. I imagine you do that by deleting a user's account. I don't want to hi-jack this thread, but I have 2 questions for the Mods or anyone with the answer.

1) Why if space is so expensive do we have searches that can go back a year?

1. a)It seems quite a few people are re-hashing year-old + threads.

2) Why not delete a thread that has been closed or merge it with other threads to save space?

2. a)It seems a waste to have a closed thread with less than 10 replies still out there.

If post count doesn't matter to everyone on this forum than losing a few 1000 post counts won't matter if in the big picture DVDTalk saves some space and $$$.

When threads are pruned users don't lose their post count so that's not really a problem.

Deleting closed threads after a while might be worthwhile if somebody went through the trouble of doing it. It would be impractical to delete them right away because people would ask why they disappeared.

Clearly you think it would affect us, or you wouldn't be suggesting it, no?

Let's take all the fun out of being in the DVDtalk community. We can just designate a number to everyone like the Borg.

It would affect those who pad their numbers just to get a higher rating. Up until this thread I didn't care what my post count was or how to even find it. I think it's a silly number that really doesn't mean much to anyone who just wants to come here to chat and post opinions.
