Is Tarantino alright?

I saw his thread from a few days ago but it was locked and he hasn't posted since. Has anyone contacted him? Is he alright?

GeoffK 02-27-04 03:15 PM

It's actually quite disturbing. The last time he logged in was the last post he made in that very scary thread.

We really don't have any contact info for him. Also he didn't seem to be logged in his IM. Very freaky.

chrisih8u 02-27-04 06:52 PM

Hopefully, he is just away getting help. BTW, was the thread deleted?

shaun3000 02-27-04 07:12 PM

I couldn't find the thread. Can someone tell me what happened?

muggins 02-27-04 07:17 PM

If I remember correctly the thread was asking a question along the lines of "How many sleeping pills does one need to take to overdose?"

On the 6th he also posted this thread: http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...hreadid=345699

The title of the writing he posted is 'Suicide Note'.

Scary stuff, indeed.

shaun3000 02-27-04 07:22 PM

Whoa.

I saw both of these threads but didn't bother opening them.

Geoff, have you tried to get in touch with the appropriate authorities, just in case??

RyoHazuki 02-27-04 07:24 PM

He asked how many sleeping pills it takes to overdose and then if i recall correctly, he said he took 96 and drank a bottle of NyQuil and said that he was feeling sick.

I hope he's alright.

uNCSUcks 02-27-04 08:25 PM

seeing that he is alright, we can remove this info.

RyoHazuki 02-28-04 04:40 PM

Does anyone have his real name?

uNCSUcks 02-28-04 04:59 PM

post removed

Buford T Pusser 02-28-04 05:15 PM

This reminds me of that guy that did himself in online. Hopefully he's okay.

NotThatGuy 02-28-04 05:18 PM

I talked to him on IM as all of that was going down. I was walking him through calling 911 and trying to get him to throw up. He called 911 (so he said) after 10 minutes into the conversation. I was trying to get him to give me his # so I can do a reverse look up and make sure emergency staff got to his place. (didn't get the #) He would log off, and then come back in 5 minutes. I think he might have been on dial-up. Then he logged off and didn't log back on.

He couldn't make himself throw up, but he said he felt like he was going to. I'm guessing the pills weren't treating his stomach very nicely....if he did indeed take them. I hope he did call 911 and they got there.

If he is still alive, he probably won't be around for a bit. He is probably under observation for a few days.

Tried to help, but not sure if I got through to him.

Copenhagen 02-28-04 05:41 PM

pedagogue big  for trying to help out, hopefully it had a positive effect.

diacritic 02-28-04 06:58 PM

I hope he is OK; this is tragic if he is not.

Can one of the admins look up his name? Perhaps we can track his phone number and try calling? Though I would be wary of that, especially if we must learn the truth from a distraught relative....

RyoHazuki 02-28-04 07:47 PM

Thanks pedagogue. Did he mention why he took all those pills?

We don't have his real name, just the info that he used to register which is a username, email, IM and IP. The only time we get the police and ISP's involved with an IP number is if someone criminally attacks the site (denial of service, etc). So it would be almost impossiable to contact his isp to try to figure out if this guy is ok.

I know one of our mods tried calling the Stockton best buy with no luck and are chasing down some other leads.

Very scary and unsettling incident.

Seeker 02-28-04 09:11 PM

I called. He's ok. More in next post.

Seeker 02-28-04 09:20 PM

I called the Stockton, CA Best Buy. After going through multiple automated lines, I got a nice female voice. I went through the "this is a strange phone call" with an explanation... she said, "We do have a Jason" - let me connect you to his manager.

A Brad/Bradford/Brandon (can't remember) answered. I went through the spiel again, and he said - "WHO ARE YOU? Where are you calling from?"

I reexplained the situation, and did say I was from Kansas City, calling California - good old internet at work.

He realized I was sincere, then said, "Yes, there was 'an incident'. I can't say much because of legal reasons, but we had 'an incident'. Let's just say that the person in the incident is ok, and in fact will probably be able to return to work in a couple of days."

I thanked him, and mentioned dvdtalk.com was concerned. He said he might check it out or have one of the person's buddies check it out. He thanked me a LOT for our concern, now that he realized we were just trying to be good samaritans. And reiterated that the "person in the incident" would be ok.

That's it.
Seeker

Copenhagen 02-28-04 09:22 PM

Thanks for doing that Seeker, glad to hear that he's ok.

RyoHazuki 02-28-04 09:48 PM

Thanks Seeker. Glad he's alright, or at least alive.

diacritic 02-28-04 09:49 PM

That's a relief. Thanks...

Seeker and Pedagogue - you guys kick ass.

Now we need to inquire about the disappearance of das Monkey - TV Talk is a hollow shell of itself w/out him.

Great job seeker. It's good to know there are still people out there who REALLY care like this and will go that extra mile.

Also shows that the internet is a good place :)

Wizdar 03-01-04 05:38 PM

“the internet is a good place”?!?

Pardon me while I get this off my chest. This may not be the most appropriate place for this post, but I don’t think a new thread is needed for it. And I certainly didn’t want to put it in Other.

25 years ago, my brother took his life with pills. An unfortunate coincidence is that his death occurred on Mother’s Day, and was made worse by the fact it was also my Mom’s birthday. About 10 years ago, my wife’s favorite nephew decided to end his life with a shotgun.

Having experienced these events, I have to say that I have never seen such a collection of hate and ignorance piled in one thread like dog droppings. Even a totally inappropriate political post or two. WTF?!? I don’t want to go into why the thread was allowed to go on for as long as it did. Since I didn’t pay attention to the time stamps, I have no opinion to offer, a concept apparently beyond several posters.

However, I’d like to balance the pure disgust I feel for a number of folks who decided to share their hatred with some positives.

Seeker
pedagogue

You guys rock! With friends like you, maybe I’d still have a brother and a nephew.

And Bando, a special  for standing your ground. I don’t know what the hell you were doing posting in such a fetid thread after it went south, but you have more respect than I will ever be able to show for what you said.

If I missed some folks who deserved mention, my apologies. No slight was intended.

Suicide is something that knows no race, sex, political, or income boundary. The reasons for it are as individual as the effects it has on those left behind. Regardless of the reasons, hatred is inappropriate of one who contemplates, attempts, or succeeds with the act as that hatred is, indirectly, being given to those family and friends involved.

uNCSUcks 03-01-04 08:13 PM

well said

Deftones 03-01-04 10:58 PM

I respect you Wizdar, and what you said but I couldn't disagree with what you posted more, aside from the props to a few of our resident Otters. I am trying to let it rest, though, so I won't go into why I think you are wrong.

Seeker 03-02-04 05:36 PM

I can only imagine that it is what I did in this thread that caused me to be a "DVD Talk Superhero".

Wow. This is the very first time anyone has messed with my name or title (other than me changing from DVD Seeker to Seeker years ago)

Reminds me of the DVDTalk Superhero club. Where's the Legion of DVDTALK superheroes? Bandoman... Cool Kitten... and the League of SuperVillains?

;)

WhoGirl 03-02-04 05:46 PM

While it's nice to see that people on an online board care enough to search out someone's info to make sure they're alright, it's kind of creepy in a way.

Not to divert the subject much. Just an observation. Is it really our position to search them out, call their work, or intrude into their personal life in any manner just because we're curious? I know there were good intentions here.... I'm just sayin'.... **shrug**

Sorry....

Sorry....

I think you are 100% correct. Ordinarily I think it's inapropriate to cross the line and seek members out. However in this case Tarantino posted a suicide note to the forum and then a couple of days later proceeded to journal his suicide on the forum.

Honestly the whole situation was a real poor one. While I am very glad that the DVD Talk Community rose to support someone in need I'm quite put off that Tarantino used our forum as an outlet for his suicide attempt. I know it had deep effects on some of the people who manage the site and to many Other forum readers.

How would you feel if you ran a site that someone 'involved' in their suicide attempt.

But all that aside, I'm proud of the level of caring for fellow members that many of our DVD Talkers have and it makes me quite happy time and time again to see people care about people they've never met face to face.

Seeker 03-02-04 07:39 PM

I don't seek people out. But in this case, I felt that something should be done.

The "Good Samaritan" did not seek anyone out, but he didn't pass the injured man by, either.

It's all a matter of degree - we don't want to intrude on people's lives, but sometimes, you feel you need to do something.

I don't think a DVD Talk forum should be an outlet for a suicide note/attempt, but on the other hand, when it happens, I'm also not going to just read and say "eh - it's not my business."

Bandoman 03-02-04 09:51 PM

Seeker - that's one of many reasons I count you as a friend.

Trevor 03-03-04 04:03 PM

While I usually just lurk or post 'shallow' messages, and never go out of my way to actually get to know people here or let people here really know me, I do want you all (the 4 or 5 of you reading this thread) to know that I really appreciate the people in this forum and would like to think that I wouldn't 'pass the injured man by' if put in that situation.

Simply put, I love you guys, thanks for being part of my extended family.
