Rationale Behind Closing Silly Thread

OK, I have seen many threads like this one closed before, so I was not surprised to see it closed after two pages. But I am curious as to the rationale behind closing a lot of these kind of threads early on.

I don't think the thread was turning into a padfest -- certainly not after just two pages -- and there were some honestly cute, creative answers.

I don't want to argue that this thread shouldn't have been closed -- again, I was expecting it to -- but I don't know that I've ever heard anyone explain why these kinds of threads are frowned upon.

To discourage copy cat threads.

It wasn't as much as a problem when there weren't so many members posting in the Other forum, but with the increase in membership has come an increased need to manage topic variety in the forum.

At least that was the thinking when I was last a mod.... :)

I guess one obvious question is, who determines the validity of a thread? And when does it get cut off -- after 2 posts? 20? 50? Or as soon as a mod notices it?

I'd guess that's the most likely option. They're not here 24/7 and can't see everything. Thus some threads like this last longer than others, or get overlooked and not closed at all.

I didn't close it. If I had read the thread, even after just the opening post, I would have closed it. It's really not any different than a "I'm thinking of a number between 1 and 10 - Guess what it is" kind of thread. Threads should provide some sort of discussion, not just guessing games.

So much for Bando and his bid for mod-dom.

;)

The mods.

Part of the reason you shouldn't piss them off. ;)

And as soon as a mod notices it.

I don't understand. His username says Blade, but the response is remarkably un-dissertation like! :p

closing silly thread.

Wait - isn't mojo a member of the silly party? Maybe this should be merged with the political forum thread.
