What'd I do?

Not quite what I expected for this. I guess I'm curious as to what rule I actually broke. (I haven't seen a thread like this in FF&S, but I admit, I didn't look too long.)

I did see this rule: "Posting complete nonsense, gibberish or using the forum to play posting games."

And I suppose I may have been guilty of that, even though I was only trying to express my gratitude to the Others.

But then, I also saw this rule: "Promoting links to an Ebay auction or other auction site (this is considered advertising)" and this happens all the time.

And this one: "Spam or promotion of your personal site for advertising purposes." Which happens a lot in sig lines.

These two: "Padding your post count with one line posts or other attempts at flooding the forum with posts" and "Signature lengths greater than five (5) lines," which damn near everybody does/has done.

I'm not upset, I understand that you have your rules, but what I AM wondering about is why the part-time enforcement?

This is my 3200th post! And everyone in this thread is an idiot! Hitler!

Static Cling 01-07-04 05:17 PM

Ever since I can remember, mods have closed threads about people's post counts.

As far as your perception of part-time enforcement goes, I can chalk that up to at least two things.

1. Many administrative actions are just between the mods and the individual members. They're not advertised on the forum.

2. We're not omniscient (although we are working on it). We do our best, but there are going to be some posters and some posts that slip by our gaze.

I hope you didn't take offense at the thread closing... I don't think it's anything worth getting upset over, on either end.

Heh. Newbie. ;) There was a time when they weren't. Ah, the glory days of the thread keeping track of post milestones, the "Movin' on Up" thread with links to all the other good threads because there was no way to "sticky" anything, <b>Groucho</b>'s (who was called <b>SxxyGrrl18</b> at the time) famous "Sex Change for Cancer" donation thread ... those were the days.

Fast forward to today when it's painfully obvious why post count threads are immediately closed.

P.S. I guess you didn't put together that this was the mod's elaborate way of tricking you into wasting your 500th post in Feedback. Mwuhahahahaha!!

Okay, maybe you're right... I remember Jack vs. twikoff, but that feels like it was a long time ago.

Actually, he's still on 499. He could keep deleting old posts and posting in here if he wanted to save #500 for something special.

Or I could copy some threads with his posts in them and push him over the mark. :)

vaporware 01-07-04 09:04 PM

Hell, I've had more posts deleted than that!!!

Or you could set his post count back to 0. Or permanently set his title to "Cool New Member". muhahaha.

I understand that you can't see everything. The only problem I have is there are some threads that you couldn't miss that for some reason still exist. I know of some examples, but I'm not here to nark on anybody.

I didn't take any offense whatsoever. I just wanted to understand, is all. I like it here, and I want to make sure I don't break any major rules, so I was just seeking clarification so as to avoid any infraction in the future. I'm not upset, I'm just a curious little cat. And I'm a dog person.

das Monkey 01-10-04 07:39 PM

Well, I'll chime in that as a poster I completely disagree with your assessment that these rules are being broken all the time. People do not mention eBay auctions here except to mock them for humor, linking your website in your sig is not against forum policies, and I don't see any sigs of more than 5 lines (1024x768). Every once in a while, one of these things might slip through the cracks, but it's very very rare, and anything that's obvious (such as your thread) is caught almost immediately.

You're going to have to be a lot less vague if you want to convince me this stuff is being missed all the time because I'm clearly missing what you claim to be "couldn't miss."

In any case, if you're sincere about learning for the future, the proper course of action when you run across a violation of forum rules is to report it to the mods, and they will take care of it. The "other people get away with it, so why can't I" defense never works.

Thanks for thinking of me. I'm not quite sure what you were wanting though. Just pick some subject and you'd make something up?

You are feeling stompled aren't you? Now you been broken in good.

No offense intended. Actually, you and El Scorcho are my favorite posters. The idea was that if there was something you wanted to post about, but you were too lazy to actually do it and spend the time 'researching' it, I would elaborate on it for you.

You have my admiration for posting some of the funniest (and most bizzare) stuff I've ever seen on DVDTalk.

Guess I should put you in my sig. :) :p

Put that in your sig, :whofart:
