banner on DVD Talk

since when did the Lord of the Rings banner able be audible? it almost scared the bejesus out of me at 1 in the morn.

muggins 11-07-03 03:01 AM

I havn't run into it yet.

I can understand the freakiness factor.

DVD Polizei 11-07-03 06:30 AM

It was either that or 3 Fast 3 Furious samples. :D

movieking 11-07-03 06:32 AM

I hate audible ads. I generally skip Zap2it now, since just about every page you click on has some kind of promo coming up with very loud volume (lately it was "SKin", but I guess it won't be there anymore...before that, it was the movie "Mystic River").

MJKTool 11-07-03 05:08 PM

Gotta say it weirded me out when I heard it. Forgot my speakers were turned on....at work!

NotThatGuy 11-07-03 05:18 PM

The matrix add on Instant Messenger freaked me out the first time.

Mole177 11-07-03 05:59 PM

is there any way to stop this type of ad? (with out turning speakers off?)

GeoffK 11-07-03 06:23 PM

This is a small run ad for the lord of the rings. You shouldn't see it any more frequently than 1x per 24 hours. There should be a STOP button on the ad... and we're not making this ad type a regular thing here, it was part of this campaign

joeblow69 11-08-03 01:31 PM

I use Pheonix, and the banner completely locks up my browser for like 2 minutes while it loads. Annoying, to say the least.

nickdawgy 11-08-03 02:35 PM

I remember seeing a Texas Chainsaw Massacre banner ad on the IMDB page. Complete with sound, lol. The first time I ran over that, I thought someone was talking to me from across the room :D

I'm also using Phoenix and while it doesn't lock up my browser the stop button doesn't seem to work. :(

Well, of course you want to see more of stuff like that... you're the reason we have this ad in the first place.

Not to be a dick, but isn't that you're answer for every annoying ad? So can we gather that DVDTalk's approach to ads is to avoid invasive ones when they're not part of campaigns, but when they are bundled in bigger deals (as they often are) you're going to go with them?

RobCA 11-12-03 12:00 AM

Worst. Ad. Ever.

Actually, I think the FearDotCom one was worse. But this one sucks too.

No, the worst banner ad of all time goes to Ford for that damn thing with all the flying birds.

Thanks for the custom title ;)

NotThatGuy 11-13-03 09:01 AM

Some of the ads on ESPN.com are REALLY annoying.

I don't mind the LOTR ad. I think I"ve seen it once. (It is pretty well done) It freaked me out because I wasn't expecting sound, but if it helps pay for the site, not a big deal.

Though the Fear.com ad got to me, but that is water under the bridge. :)

El Scorcho 11-13-03 10:53 AM

Why can't you have ads where the default is sound off and you can turn it on if you so desire? :)

Eric F 11-13-03 03:00 PM

It is kind of annoying- this particular ad makes you scroll up to it and click the speaker icon to turn it off every time.

Of course they're counting on this, that you'ld click the ad wrong and go through to their page. Ads like this do not engender good feelings from the consumer. I realize they're supposed to be annoying to get your attention, too bad they can't find a more unobtrusive way to sell their product.
