Thanks for adding the option to e-mail someone directly from a post!

This is an option that I've always felt was missing here. Previously, if I wanted to e-mail someone from their post, I'd have to click the e-mail icon, copy their e-mail address, go to my Yahoo! Mail account, and paste the address in the "To:" field (I don't use my browser's default e-mail, so I couldn't just click on their address). Great addition, Geoff.

I'll repeat: .
:D

I noticed this last week and forgot to write about this. I agree, great addition, plus it keeps your email hidden unless you choose to reply.

Can we no longer share our email address is we want? I'm glad that this feature has been added, but sometimes I want to e-mail a member from another account or send the same thing to multiple people or whatever. I think we should still have the option to share our email with the public (if it's not still there) if we want.

Thanks for the compliment. We really implemented this new feature to prevent people from 'harvesting' emails from our site. Over the past few weeks we've had a few complaints about email sent to accounts that they ONLY use for the forum, so we know that there was some level of email harvesting going on.

Now NO emails are disclosed publicly and ONLY members can use the email form to contact other members.

If you'd like everyone to know your email address you're always welcome to put it in your sig. But I'd advise against it.

This is one of many things we're doing at DVD Talk to ensure the security of our members info. This past week we converted our newsletter systems to be 'double optin' w/ confirmations to ensure no one gets signed up against their will. We're now recognized by Yahoo and AOL as a trusted email sender, and have applied to the new Truste bonded sender program.

With all the crap that gets hucked at people's email on a daily basis we're working hard to make sure our members know how much we value their privacy and information.

Some good news on this front:

DVD Talk has been certified by the Bonded Sender Program which identifies legitimate email traffic for the benefit of email senders and receivers. Originators of legitimate email post a financial bond to guarantee the integrity of their email. ISPs and corporations use the Bonded Sender Program to identify bonded email and ensure it is delivered to the recipient’s inbox. Additionally DVD Talk adheres to the Bonded Sender Code of Standards

:blush::blush: I think I just accidentally emailed some random person while intending to send a test message to myself!

[How dumb is that!?]

Blade 09-16-03 05:15 PM

Glad to see this was put into affect!

That would be me.

So, what were you saying about sending only legitamite e-mails, Geoff? ;)

I love the bonded sender idea.

I agree, this new method can be a pain in the butt. Let people who want the privacy have it, but don't make it mandatory.

I think it's a pretty small price to pay to protect the privacy of our members.

I have been visiting here for almost 3 years and it has not been a problem for me. I was not suggesting that the option should not be available for those who wish to protect their e-mail address, but for those of us who trade dvds a lot, it is a nuisance. The e-mail format does not lend itself well to sending trade lists in an easily read format. But thanks for trying to continually improve the site, it's the best on the net.

das Monkey 10-01-03 09:16 PM

What sucks is that people still aren't making themselves available for emails. Perhaps you could make an announcement so everyone knows that it's "safe" now?

One way to make your e-mail address be public is to put it in your sig.
