oh yea.. that was a year ago though ;)

Only thing I would like to see is that the competitions be opened up to international (paid) members - even if we need to pay a little for the postage.

Any updates on where you are going with this one?

Pretty sure many (myself included) would help to pay for this site.

I think the biggest hold up is probably what payment method to accept. (I haven't talked to Geoff about this before I comment, but I'm just going to guess here) As mentioned before, paypal will hang us alive because of the adult forum, which will mean we would need a regular credit card processor for online payments, which would be kind of annoying as most people would probably prefer paypal..there maybe other things, or he may just not be ready yet..but it's definately something that has been considered..

Eh? Is that really true? I could certainly understand their refusal to broker memberships for, say, rip-productions or adultdvdtalk. But probably 97% of forum traffic is non-mature - and even carefully policed. There's probably less mature content in the non-mature forums at DVD Talk than at most forums that <i>don't</i> have a mature section (or careful moderating.)

Here's what I see as a key difference: DVD Talk is not using Paypal to handle age verification. That's one primary purpose of adult sites' use of credit cards, and it doesn't apply here. There are two important consequences of this:

1) Age is not a factor in DVD Talk membership. We don't need (or want) them to ask anything, or to provide age data back to us.

2) The mature forum is open (on the same rules) to paying and non-paying members alike. Membership does not grant access to any content that non-members can't reach.

In this light, are we still sure that Paypal would give us <strike>blue balls</strike> the cold shoulder?

I don't think Paypal's issue is with the adult forum (or if it is, it's a small concern), but the adult reviews. Huge difference and I don't think they are going to change their policy.

pilot 02-02-05 12:25 AM

pretty sure that's the issue with paypal ...they don't allow any payments for anything adult related..even though they're paying for a membership to the forum, not for something adult-specific, it won't work ...

cultshock 02-03-05 03:32 PM

I think that the big reason that Paypal isn't allowed to be used for adult sites/products is the high risk of chargebacks for people paying through Paypal using their credit card for funds ("Why no, honey, I didn't order this porn. I'd better call our credit card company and cancel the charge because there must be some terrible mistake!" ;) ). That really wouldn't be an issue here, but I guess rules are rules.

Good news!

geoff: One of the main things you disliked on page 1 was the @dvdtalk.com address. I don't think you need to set up a webmail client or anything BUT it would be nice to have [email protected] as an alias. That is, sending an email to [email protected] will send gcribbs an email to his real address. I'd also recommend off-loading that from the current server. You can get someone else to handle that competently at a reasonanle price.

What is the issue with avatars? Surely, moderating for avatars is a pain, but they are tied in with messages. It's just like moderating for signatures or posted images.

Avatars were a bandwith issue, IIRC.

The possibility of someone passing themselves off as a representative of the site and causing trouble might get in the way of that. Then again, premium members would probably not want to cause trouble for the site. Who knows.

could use another domain like dvdtalkmember.com
