I'm getting tired of someone's ongoing joke about killing animals. Cats, dogs, etc... I'm SURE I'll be slammed over this, but I think it's a valid argument.

Some people by virtue of tenure and history are allowed certain leniencies. Most people know kvrdave's story so I think people have gotten comfortable with his posts (good or bad).

Personally, I have nothing against what he says because I think he's usually joking, but I could certainly see how some people might deem his posts offensive.

I'm not sure if the moderators or admininstrators will regulate him talking about killing animals, so the best you can do, maybe, is to put him on your ignore list and/or ignore his posts.

Killing animals is illegal. And I understand the that it is a joke. However, I still find it offensive and think it should stop. If it was a one time thread, fine, but not all the time.

Lots of things that are legal are not allowed here. Posting war pics, talking about backing up software, even certain websites are off limits. I don't think it is out of line to think this should stop.

I don't mind it when people joke about killing animals. But I do mind "teaser" subject headers. :mad:

Um, aside from the obvious hunting example provided by Def, here in Colorado (not sure if it's statewide, but it is the law in many counties for sure) you can shoot a dog on your property, whether or not the dog was actually chasing livestock, and whether or not you actually have livestock (although those are the origins of the rule). SO, not always illegal.

Dave is definitely joking, although I do sometimes wonder about his fixation with furry beasts. -eek-

You know, I tell my dog all the time "You're ok, I'll think I'll keep you." My ex-GF used to get mad at me for saying that, because she thought it was mean. Do you think my dog cared? She slipped me the tongue, that's how much she cared! :yack: :lol: My point is, there are no dogs or cats reading this forum, as far as I know, and there are no dogs or cats that are suffering hurt as a result of his threads. If the dogs don't care, I'm not sure we should.

So hunting any animal is legal? No there are rules and laws regarding hunting. And since when is killing a pit bull hunting?

Ahh, but you didn't specify that. You just made a blanket statement that "killing animals is illegal". I was calling you on it. As for your concerns, you must not hang around "Other" alot. There is good reason why Dave jokes about this stuff. It's part of the lore of other. He is joking. Get over it.

Were you guys born without a sense of humor or did you have it removed?

Almost on topic - I'm effing sick of people talking about dropping bombs on N Korea. It amounts to genocide. It's like it is okay for people to bad mouth the French, Palestinians, Koreans, and yet it's a bannable offense to say anything against Jewish, Hispanic, or African Americans. I got suspended once a long time ago - part of the reason was that I said the word Mexicans instead of Latin Americans or whatever I'm supposed to say. It's either too PC in some cases or not PC enough and it doesn't really seem fair to me.

As for the killing of animals thing - I don't really like that either... although I did discuss a murder of a few insects in a recent thread. I apoligize if that offended anyone.

Let me point out a difference here. And trust me, I am not a fan of those claiming we should bomb the crap out of any nation.

In the first group, the references were not to a race. They were to France (and yes the joking around was overboard). There is some jingoistic posturing as can be expected. I am not sure about the Palestinians, but most talk was directed towards Iraq, a country. The latest thead you are referring to was directed towards North Korea, a country. Not to Koreans.

Jewish, Hispanic, and African Americans are not countries that we are at war (or saber rattling) with.

I think the forum should have a contest, the millionth poster to bitch about other members extreme political views should get a prize.

dave is joking. he has a dog, he likes dogs (except those that attack his kids). If you really have a problem, email him, he'll probably tone it down a little.

I knew I would get called out to "Get a sense of humor". I just think it's in poor taste and a case selective moderation. (someone else mentioned "tenure and history")

And to those that say I must not hang around "other" a lot. I visit every day. I "get" it. (I've actually been registered longer than dave) but I still find it offensive. I'm tired of it and think someone should let him know. I don't find killing animals funny in anyway. Plenty of people are very understanding when other otters lose a pet, but it's ok when someone continues to talk about killing dogs and cats?

And Deftones, I didn't start the Killing Animals is legal or illegal. Venusian did (but added "to some extent") Killing a dog as described without cause, would be illegal in most states.

The problem here is that RandyC's civility thread has become ineffective. :(

well changes can happen. Jules use to call people ******s all the time and someone complained so the mods put an end to it. I think you just have to take it for what it is. If you look, I doubt you can find any thread where someone posted about their dead pet in which dave said he likes to shoot animals. Most of us in Other "know" each other and therefore know when something is a joke. You obviously know this is a joke but just dont find it funny. I guess that goes back to randy's ebb and flow post.

To be fair, his complaint goes beyond thinking it's not funny; he finds it offensive.

With all due respect, Chrisedge, I have a hard time seeing it, especially considering that you know it's a joke, it has specific roots in Otter lore, it's not directed at any humans, and Dave even has a dog! But to each his own. Honestly, even if Dave himself chose to stop, you'd still see the jokes. Anytime a dog or cat comes up, somebody is going to make the joke (even if we love dogs and cats).

Just because someone is offended by something does not mean that it is inherently offensive. I understand that reading about killing animals bothers you, but we just can't put the kibosh on discussing any subject that one or a few people find offensive.

I would suggest that if you are offended by a certain poster's actions, you put him on "Ignore."
