Unwritten Rules: Posting Ettiquette

OK, so I replied to a post in the Other Forum and added in a link to a thread in the Mature Forum. I got properly taken to task for now warning users that I was linking to an adults-only forum.

(And I was 100% in the wrong here -- no debate at all.)

I have read over the Forum Rules (which are excellent, BTW), and I get the general posting guidelines -- no flaming, no thread crapping, no linking to personal sites, etc. What I want to know is: what unwritten rules of posting etiquette are out there that are not contained in the rules.

Example: there is apparently a standard out there about including too many images in one post. What is the rule of thumb?

I think this would be a tremendous boon to new users, such as myself, that want to be a part of the group without stepping on any more toes. What are other examples of proper posting form?

Why would this thread be locked? Does this come across as sarcastic? Because if so... it is certainly not my intent. I just wanted to make sure that I did not do something inappropriate.

Bandoman 06-13-03 12:19 PM

Sorry, ncmojo - Groucho and I were simply demonstrating past wide-spread posting practices that are not allowed.

I guess you just have to hang around and learn how things are done and how the forum-specific rules of etiquette go. There really is no codification of them (hence the "unwritten" part ;) ).

NCMojo 06-13-03 12:26 PM

Ah, I see! Crafty, you seasoned DVDTalk veterans are.

OK, so is the best solution to just wait until I do something inappropriate, and then someone will almost certainly point it out?

immortal_zeus 06-13-03 12:27 PM

If we write the "unwritten rules" here, they wouldn't be "unwritten" now would they? N00b.

Yep. Just stomp around the room like you own the place. When you step on someone's toes, he'll kick you in the nuts, and you'll know not to do it again. Problem solved.

"We learn by doing ..."

"Ow, my toes!"

"Ow, my nuts!"

;)

don't post too many pics (or warn for modems). don't post adult links outside of Mature. don't post some links anywhere (like gorss stuff). don't post spoilers anywhere unless they are in spoiler tags.

i'm sure there are others

Stepping on toes ain't that bad.

Some member's wife got on here and layed down the law 'cause he hated having Bounce in his collection. At least you aren't that guy.

NCMojo 06-13-03 01:26 PM

Yeah, well, believe you me, my nuts are still a bit sore from that day.

(Addendum -- yes, of course I love you, honey bunny! Hey, let's go watch another great romantic comedy on DVD, OK? Look here -- I've got Serendipity...)

Movie_Man 06-13-03 05:09 PM

Speaking of unwritten rules, why is it a no-no to link to some sites, but not others. Just the other day I saw a post that had a link deleted by a mod with the comment "we don't allow links to that site". So what are the banned sites? Or can't you list them because then that would be a violation?

There are a few that contain content deemed not acceptable for use here.

We consider them so offensive that we don't even want people to learn about them from our site so it's difficult to get specific. Perhaps my references to cj, sp, and rot will suffice.

That would not be X's style

I'll have to make a project of helping Keyser figure it out.

Enormously helpful, thank you. By the way, whatever happened to Keyser's Virtual Bar? Don't recall seeing that in the Otter forum...

immortal_zeus 06-18-03 12:39 AM

I don't get it.

Gosh... at some point, it was too obvious what we were saying could not be said. Or something like that.

El Scorcho 06-18-03 11:53 AM

My immensely-witty reply has been removed and now the masses will be deprived of such hilarity. :(
