A Glitch in the Matrix?

I've noticed some posts I and others made are simply disappearing, as if self-deleted. At first I thought mine had been admin-deleted for some reason and posted an apology, but never got a reply or notice. Is there a new bug?

Static Cling 06-12-03 10:14 AM

Can you be specific?

There were images posted by icondude, Terd Ferguson and myself. Terd may have deleted his, but I didn't delete mine. No skin off my nose either way, but if it's a bug I thought you should know. I can also post screenshots of the thread up to a point, if you need them. Thanks!

edited to add icondude

I doubt it was a bug. While I haven't deleted anyone's posts lately, I wouldn't be surprised to see posts containing the Richard Simmons image or repeated use of an image(multiple pads) disappear. From the rules:

Although DVD Talk does not and cannot review the messages posted and is not responsible for the content of any of these messages, we at DVD Talk reserve the right to delete any message for any or no reason whatsoever.

Oh no... Morpheus... where are you? I need to take the red pills RIGHT NOW.

Bandoman 06-13-03 08:10 AM

No way. I'm taking the blue pill. I like my fantasy life.

I am only able to "Quick Reply" in any thread. Hoping this gets read in here as I am unable to start any new threads. The buttons are just gone where they used to be... any advise or reason why? No buttons for New Thread or Post Reply, can't quote or anything :(

X 06-14-03 12:23 PM

The buttons come from DVD Talk's ad server. You are blocking ads. Don't block ads that come from ads.kleinman.com.

SpinDizzy 06-14-03 12:30 PM

ahhh, well i guess Norton does work after all... but how do i tell it to accept ads from just your address? Using Norton Internet Security '03.

SpinDizzy 06-14-03 12:40 PM

Added ads.kleinman.com to my list of websites and checked "permit" for all options; still no go :(

X 06-14-03 12:44 PM

Don't know then, sounds like something wrong with your configuration as you're the first person to say that didn't work.

You could try turning off all adblocking just to see if that's it.

just disabled my security program alltogether, and now it works... nice to be back. but i would still like to narrow this down. i'm gonna try and research some more.

SpinDizzy 06-14-03 12:56 PM

was just curious... why have a forum where you make users view pop-ups/ads?

That's not really my area, but I believe it helps allow not having to charge to view the site.

They're actually pop-unders...but why would you have an ad revenue based forum if you're going to make it easy for people to block your ads?

SpinDizzy 06-14-03 01:12 PM

woohoo... figured it out! first i had to add the website dvdtalk.com to my list of websites, and then permit ads.kleinman.com in the ad blocking for this specific site. i was adding ads.kleinman.com to be permitted when i viewed some other site.

good point, i don't aggree with this, but i like this forum :)

Using something to stop the ads is actually theft.

Would you have any interest in supporting the site through a subscription (w/o ads)?

i disagree with your first statement in general, but i've just read in a nother thread the following:

Actually blocking ads violates the forum membership agreement:

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DVD Talk is a private membership organization, NOT a public forum. Membership to DVD Talk is predicated on your adherance to the rules and policies detailed below. Failure to abide by these rules will result in the closure of your forum account and an end to your Membership on the site. DVD Talk Membership is not free, the membership fee (which would be thirty dollars per year) is paid on your behalf by the advertisers on this site. As such you agree not to use any ad blocking or suppression software or be liable for your membership fee.

as for supporting this site through a subscription; i have to say that i would not. i'm a member of many forums in other areas of discussion- all of which have no pop-ups/unders or any other "forced" advertising. i do agree with this sites link to the stores. i've supported them always through my dvd purchases, but i don not enjoy the "forced" advertising to participate. i will tolerate it though, because i enjoy this web site.

I guess, in the same way some TV execs believe that taping a TV show and skipping the ads while watching it is "theft".

Regardless, it's against forum rules, it allows us to avoid paying a membership fee, and they really are not that instrusive, so I feel no particular desire to block the popunders here.

And any overly intrusive ad campaign will simply alienate some of the sponsor's target audience. Remember the obnoxious Feardotcom ads? As a result, I've refused to buy, rent or even watch that movie, even though I like the genre.

Speaking of disappearing acts, the thread I posted yesterday in other entitled "Split Down The Middle..." has completely vanished. Just wondering if I unintentionally deleted it while sleepwalking last night, or if it was deliberately deleted by a mod? Either way, no skin off my tongue. :D
