Spyware...here?

I just got a pop-up on the Movie forum that started loading Gator on my machine. I've got nothing else running.... That's mildly annoying.

Has anyone else had this happen?

I suggest running SpyBot (http://security.kolla.de/) and seeing if the problem happens again after you do a little spyware cleaning.

I use spybot daily... that's not the issue.

Hmm. Sometimes Spybot has to restart my computer and clean out some stuff before all my programs get loaded up... I'm guessing you've tried that, too. I don't know what else to tell you... sorry. :(

I've never received a pop-up like that, but for Gator to be installed on your machine, you have to approve the pop-up, which I'm sure you didn't do since you run spybot daily. Absolutely sure no other browser windows were open?

That's strange. I'll looked at our ad networks to see if somehow was coming from them.... and it's not. Could it have been a pop-under from another site you had visited?

This is not necessarily the case, I've been hit with Gator and Xupiter without clicking anything.

Thanks to everyone for their advice...I'm not sure what happened, but I guess it's no big deal.

You sure you have IE set to prompt before DLs? I've been prompted a few times asking permission to install Gator, but never had it install on its own.

I've had both gator and xupiter dl without prompt or selecting to download. My IE is set to prompt. Xupiter is the worse of the two, it being a browser hijacker.

I use spybot daily.
