Thread title changes, necessary?

Are the constant thread title changes necessary? It's funny to a point but some recent examples are a bit crude. Who is doing this by the way?

Some examples from today...

Best Paint for you money? --> Best Paint for you monkey?

Update: I got a job --> Update: I got a handjob --> Update: I got a reach-around

Now when people are going into the threads they are merely making some remark in reference to what the thread title change is and not what the thread was about in the first place (essentially a threadcrap).

I would like to know whether other people have a issue with this (given that it doesn't happen to many threads)

Iron Chef 03-03-03 04:27 PM

pray they don't change your status

The Antipodean 03-03-03 04:35 PM

I think it's pretty idiotic to change an innocous thread title into one that has nothing to do with the subject. But then again the mods do live sad lonely lives for their cause so we have to give them something... ;)

Bushdog 03-03-03 04:44 PM

Are they doing it to your thread? I think you may need to consider if you need to nanny other people's threads. 5 gets you 10, moorehed doesn't mind the title change to HIS thread.

Also, the thread titles are changed when the thread has outlived its initial usefulness as a rule.

Why do you have an issue with it?

Groucho 03-03-03 04:47 PM

Watch out, Bushdog's gone all Hulk on us!

X 03-03-03 04:58 PM

I think you missed "Whats the best kitty litter for your monkey?"

RandyC 03-03-03 05:03 PM

We can't have enough monkey threads

Come on, it is just one of DVDTalks pieces of flare.

I don't have a particular issue with the changing of a thread's subject line nor do I feel that I am "nannying" a thread. Obviously people do find it necessary because it gives them some sort of enjoyment at seeing a funny title thread.

I don't feel it was appropriate to have a thread title in other that refers to a handjob and/or reach-around but I guess that is my opinion. And because of that opinion I raised the question on what, as a whole, people felt about the changing thread titles.

Mutley Hyde 03-03-03 06:45 PM

I personally have no complaint about the thread title changes, however, I do find it rather hypocritical that mods can make their cute, fun little title changes, yet parody threads* are looked down upon with absolute disdain and closed with a swift, harsh malignity which I find quite discouraging.

* I compare parody threads to thread title changes because that's essentially what they are; the only difference being that a forum member does not have the power that mods have to change thread titles, so one must open a new thread altogether in order to share their discouraged, outlawed wit with their fellow, oppressed Otters, thus attracting the ruthless rancor of the idiot mods.

One significant difference between the two practices is that mods changing thread titles doesn't take up any more space/bandwidth/whatever on DVD Talk servers. Starting up new threads does, though.

Mutley Hyde 03-03-03 11:06 PM

Oh, I knew that, but it still comes off a bit hypocritical. I actually enjoy the thread title changes... I just don't enjoy being a powerless Otter who can't make my own.

Bandoman 03-04-03 07:47 AM

Great, here's another fun aspect of Other that will probably be curtailed or eliminated because a few people complain. -rolleyes-

Are thread title changes necessary? Of course not. Neither are jokes, or the entire forum, for that matter.

CharlesC 03-04-03 03:11 PM

I totally agree with Bandoman. We should do away with jokes.

And sarcasm.

Bandoman 03-04-03 09:20 PM

Don't even get me started on the irony.

Clearly Bandoman isn't necessary and he should be removed!

Not necessarily...

In page three of this thread, the thread name was changed as a joke (and is still that way). It is now on page 8 (and still on topic).

Old name: Most Americans Believe In Hell, Few Expect To Go There
New name: Few Americans Believe In Hell, Most Expect To Go There

Also, just to slightly disagree with Static, title changes do increase bandwidth usage when "Who changed the title?" posts, or even people posting "" at the title change (but not adding to the substance of the thread).

Static Cling 03-06-03 06:32 PM

Thanks for backing me up, Aggie. :)

Which is why I said "as a rule." Mods aren't without flaws, I guess that makes them just like the rest of us.

RandyC 03-07-03 10:14 AM

No way!

ViewAskewbian 03-07-03 10:05 PM

Well, at least it wasn't "Best Hand Job For Your Monkey".
