Forum leaders are hypocrites?
Im sure this thread will get closed..but I had to voice my opinion.
Last week or so someones post was closed due to a link that lead to something that contained pornographic material. Static Cling posted the following before he closed it... "Next time, be a little more considerate and provide some sort of warning that "adult content" is behind the linnk. People surf this forum with family around, and also at work... these are not places that you want naked chicks popping up on your screen. Closing thread" UMMM..HELLO??? I surf the web with family and my gf around and they have to see banners advertising "SEX TOYS" and adult videos on this site. The banners have scantly clad women....what does this have to do with DVD talk?? Even though I personally am not offended, Im going to speak for my GF and parents and say THEY are offended and wonder what kind of "trashy" site Im on now. I think DVD talk needs to stop being hypocrites and clean up their acts. Not everyone wants to see add banners for XXX videos and toys... Especially those with children around... |
I don't like the porn ads, but it pays for the site!!! I hope you are willing to pay out at least 10 dollars a month to use the site. If not for porn ads we may not have dvd talk. The ads only come on after nine I think when most children should be in bed. But, I am the forum idiot.

I'm not going to close the thread (surprise!), but I will move it to the Feedback Forum, which is where questions and comments about the forum itself belong.
You also might want to do a search for the previous threads on this subject... I'm pretty sure Geoff has addressed this issue at least once. |

To add to that, we were all told about the addition of adult ads on the site, whereas one may not be able to determine content of a link just by the URL.

Uh. one thing is seeing ads for sex toy. Another thing is seeing a chick spread eagle in a link. The Ad's pay for the site, we have to deal with them but you do realize they are pretty much standard in the image they show. It's not like they are flashing boobs. Static was correct to do so.
Also, those ad's only are set to be presented during the late hours when little childern are not looking or the chances are low of them being present. And is a warning placed on the thread before the link is clicked to much to ask? |
Child: "Daddy?"
Parent: "Yes?" Child: "What is a sex toy?" |

Originally posted by DVD Polizei Child: "Daddy?" Parent: "Yes?" Child: "What is a sex toy?" Children: "Hi, Daddy!" Parent: "Hey, kids!" *clicks on T2 link, watches as a window pops up with three naked women on it* Yeah, you just wanted to be sure what you saw behind the T2 link. - How exactly would warning people what they were going to get when they clicked influence that at all? - How many posts outside of the Mature Forum have you seen in the year that you've been here that either contained nudity (that the mods didn't eventually change to a link) or linked to nudity without a warning (that the mods didn't eventually post a warning about)? You were wrong, and maybe you're upset that you were called on it. But the ads displayed on the site... which don't contain nudity... don't change that. |
Originally posted by John Stone I guess only people in the US browse this forum? Or perhaps "late hours" now occur at the exact same time all over the world? ;) |
Yeah this isn't a forum for adults at all. Geoff just wants to keep it tasteful. No swearing, no dirty linking outside the mature forum, and no hardcore linking inside the mature forum. Rules to live by

Where are you guys seeing those ads? On the front page? I don't even have pop-up stopper and haven't seen those ads mentioned.
|
They're banner ads run on the page. I think they only run at certain times of the day, so maybe that's why you're not seeing them.
|
Oh, guess I'm just lucky. :)

Originally posted by LurkerDan [....] this response is entirely unhelpful, and seems like an inappropriate response for anyone, but especially a mod. I expressly agreed with the poster I quoted and, yes, also echoed a point that had been made earlier. I pointed out a feasible construction to put on why the initial post/thread was placed (inappropriately) where it was and I stand by that 100%. Points are frequently repeated in threads across the forum so I cannot see why you argue against it here. And people are permitted to express their own views so long as they stay within the rules, which I am sure that my post did. I certainly don't "shadow-moderate" forums that are the responsibility of others: I use the "rptam" link in the same way that everyone else is encouraged to. Clearly I am not an Admin and don't moderate this forum. Accordingly, I feel that I retain the same entitlement as does any other member to post my two pennies worth. That is all I did here. FYI I sign the posts I make in a moderating capacity in the forums that I do moderate. It happens that I often post in those same forums in a non-moderating capacity and would not wish to be feel obliged to stop. That would seem to be the logical conclusion of having always to be on my "best behaviour" or to appear somehow "holier than thou".... While you may regard the post in question as being inappropriate I really can't see it myself: I've seen far harsher - and permissable - responses from other members, themselves in reply to less contentious posts than the one at issue, across the breadth of the various forums to be found here. |

Which forum contained the original post with the porn link? If it was the Mature forum, then it's hypocritical, imo. If it was anywhere else, it's just good forum moderation.

If you want to avoid the ads on the front page, Just type this in on the address browser
http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/index.php and then go on from there (supposing you want to get on the forum right away right? |
