I saw this movie before I bought it, but is it still considered a Blind Buy?

I actually appreciate the "Blind Buy" posts. It's good to know what the rest of us think and it gives us more opinions to consider and a chance for people to vent (if they want). What harm is that?

The BTTF framing error was definitely news.

Shouldn't that be covered in a review? I mean if a review can cover blind buying, it should cover errors as well.

Music 01-20-03 11:06 PM

I think all errors should be reported seperately.

Why would I go read a review about a movie that I already like/love?

In defence of Blind Buy threads ...

Was just reading the Brotherhood of the Wolf 'Blind Buy' thread ...

Some people seem to have a prob with BB threads. One guy even said he couldn't see how BB threads could possibly help the undecided make their minds up.

Coincidentally, I'd just been thinking: ".. hmmm ... there's more and more Blind Buy threads on DVD Talk these days ..."

I like them. You get to hear some opinions, some facts, some humour, and you mix it all up and take your decision. No different from 'should I ask that girl out over there?' or 'should I buy a pair of combats or would they make me look stupid?'. That's what these Forums are all about - reading other people's opinions. In fact, it's the very best thing about the internet, full stop.

I for one hope that the DVD Talk administrators turn a Blind Eye to the Blind Buy threads ...

But why would you want other people's opinion on a movie?
You have to see it yourself. A thousand people could say 'it's great', and you might still end up thinking it sucked.

Rent the movie if you're not sure!

GuessWho 01-23-03 09:03 AM

i understand you want others' opinions, but there are better places to ask!!

Want opinions on the films plot, story, characters, directing, actions, acting?
Post your question in MOVIE TALK.

Want opinions on DVD specs, extra features, etc?
Post your question in DVD REVIEWS

First snapper cases, now blind buy threads. This place is a hot bed of controversy!

rabbit77 01-23-03 09:29 AM

Are you kidding me??!!!

Combat boots make you look stupid. You're not the type that could pull it off.

As others said, they don't belong in DVD talk.

If you want to know about the movie, ask in movie talk. If you want to know if the DVD is any good, ask in DVD reviews.

Other than that I have no problem with them. I just avoid them as I do pretty much all review type threads, because I simply don't care what other people think about movies, especially random people on the internet. I just watch them myself and form my own opinion. I never blind buy anything, I'll rent first. $4 or $5 isn't a big deal to me.

Static Cling 01-23-03 10:58 AM

Geez, now we have multiple threads about the blind buy threads. Moving to Feedback.

GuessWho 01-23-03 10:59 AM

just a side note: in the Reviews forum, they're known as "Review Wanted: (movie title here)" threads ;)

The system seems to have worked so far. BB threads are the same, just wolves in sheep clothing

Bandoman 01-23-03 11:03 AM

Okay, so what is the DVDTalk forum for again?

Static Cling 01-23-03 11:10 AM

The "Main" forum? Or the forums as a whole?

Although, I think there's a slight difference between the two. Blind Buy threads are more like "Opinions Wanted: (movie title here)" than an actual request for reviews.

I really don't mind these types of threads that much. If it's a title I think I might have an interest in, I'll read the thread. If it's a title I already have an opinion on, I might even respond. And of course, if it's a title I have no interest in, I'll ignore the thread completely rather than respond with a complaint since I'm sure other people may find the thread useful even if I'm not.

Static Cling 01-23-03 11:15 AM

What is a review other than giving your opinion (although a review could be more of a listing of facts/specs, rather than an opinion)? What is an opinion other than a quick summary of how you felt about the disc... a condensed review, in a sense?

I'm asking these questions seriously... does anyone feel that these are accurate/inaccurate descriptions of opinions and reviews?

Music 01-23-03 11:23 AM

Boo hoo!!! WAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!

He likes this thread better than mine.... ;)

Oh and Static, I don't like your location... seems insulting...

Tscott 01-23-03 12:22 PM

Well, I've noticed there seems to be a big difference in the responses to the "blind buy" and the "review wanted" threads.

a typical thread in the reviews forum goes something like:

Review wanted: Eternity Forever
is it any good???
Reply 1
Here's a [url=ww.moviereview/#123567854]Link[url]
Reply 2
It could be interesting...
End thread

but in the DVDtalk forums:

Is Eternity Forever a good Blind Buy?
I was considering getting this film because I liked the last three films this director did. But I really don't like the main star. Should I get it?
Reply 1
Forget everything you thought you knew about the star. He actually acts in this film
Reply 2
I saw it in the theater. It was ok but kind of depressing. I'd suggest renting it first.
Reply 3
I'm getting this blind myself. Even if the film's only so-so, the first ever commentary by the director should be worth owning.
Reply 4
I really like the star of the film but this is BY FAR the worst film he's ever been in!!! Get "Look! I'm a Girl?" or "Hey, They Hit Me on the Head" with him instead.
Reply 5
YES!!!!
...thread continues on for 2 more pages...

I don't know if its just that the review forums get less traffic, but the difference in responses is there, and frankly if I'm just browsing the review threads and this is a title I personally know little about I might not bother reading the linked review.

But in the Blind Buy thread, I get pretty a good idea about the film without having to read through a full review at some other site. Also, I get more than just that one opinion. Are people giving reviews? well sort of, but there's also others who haven't seen it giving opinions, comments on buying vs renting, etc.

OK, Maybe the person who started the thread IS being lazy by not looking for reviews of a title they're interested in. But, others might not even have that much interest in the title and become interested only after reading some comments in the blind buy thread. And if they find out about a great new DVD they didn't know much about to begin with isn't that what DVDtalk is all about?
